This from Eric Haak:
The Gary, Indiana Fire Department fought 6 fires within 12 hours on Saturday, January 31st. This was the last of those fires which was dispatched just before noon and was at 24th and Colfax, just 2 blocks north of Station 13. There was also a fire at 36th and Colfax in the early morning hours.Like the other 5 buildings, this structure was vacant. It was a 1-story, 35×50 frame with an attached garage. It appeared that the main body of the fire was in the rear section that looked like an addition to the original home. An initial interior attack was made which knocked down a good portion of the fire. Companies then backed out and the fire in the rear addition was put out from the exterior. Also pictured are Engines 8 and 13 as well as Truck 2.

Gary was known as the “Steel City” and the FD has adopted the nickname of
“Still City”. A still alarm is 2 engines and 1 truck. With a chief and squad (usually 4 guys in an ex-engine now). They have or had a box level that included an extra engine and truck and chief but with equipment shortages I think everything is just handled with a still response. They have a very good Facebook page that has tons of photos of station life and scenes usually updated daily. They do call mutual aid from neighboring towns occasionally and station 13s district sometimes requires a M/A tender from lake ridge due to lack of hydrants.

Is that all they get – two engines and a truck for a working fire? About 9 FF’s and maybe two more from the squad plus the chief?
Does not appear to be a good situation.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
