Thanks for the info Drew. The green light on the officers side (right/starboard) for some Dept’s is added after delievery as the rig has to be NFPA compliant when it leaves. I think the green light has its place because of knowing facing or away, as well as an old tradition in the Chicagoland area that really doesn’t hurt to not change that one!

Proof that you learn something new all the time. Thanks Drew for shedding some light on this. 🙂

From NFPA 1901Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus
13.8.12* Color of Warning Lights.
13.8.12.1 Permissible colors or combinations of colors in each zone, within the constraints imposed by applicable laws and regulations, shall be as shown in Table 13.8.12.1.
13.8.12.2 All colors shall be as specified in SAE J578, Color Specification, for red, blue, yellow, or white.
Table 13.8.12.1specifies that when Calling for Right-of-Way(responding) any color can be used in any zone except yellow cannot be used to Zone A and white cannot be used to Zone C.
When Blocking Right-of-Way(on scene) any color except white can be used in any zone. White cannot be used when blocking.
Zones are:
Front of apparatus = A
Rear of apparatus = C
Sides are B (officer) and D (driver)

I stand corrected and thanks. I was partly tongue and cheek with that but such things have happened where there were odd features on rigs. I did look up that depts. site and there are blue lights on the rigs just not in that same location. As long as CFD never omits that green light on the officers side, they can mandate any color they want if they think it improves safety I guess.

Both of our Current Engines have blue lights as well as our newest Ambulance.

No, Milton, blue lights are now becoming part of the standard lighting via NFPA 1901. Even Chicago apparatus have them now, i.e. the Crimson aerials have blue lights on the rear.

Looks interesting with those blue lights on the driver side. HEHE perhaps this chassis was destined as the foundation for a police command post someplace then the order was cancelled at the last second.
