This from Dennis McGuire, Jr;
Yesterday I went past this place on 43rd St in the Stockyards that does all the lights and other small modifications for city vehicles and noticed two 2012 Ford Explorers. Both were painted black over red with a gold strip between the two colors. They’re obviously for the CFD. I talked to Jim Regan and he confirmed that a total of seven are on order and they are all 2012 Ford Explorers.

@Keith– I don’t think the reason for the Tahoes and Expeditions had really anything to do with the MDTs … figuring that the CPD, and a few other city agencies also got a ton of them for their staff.

I thought the CFD went away from the Ford Explorers in the past and switched to the Expeditions and Tahoes because they are roomier and had better access for mounting the MDC’s? Other than poor gas mileage, the only reason I can see this switch being made is the fact that these Explorers are manufactured in Chicago.
