The end of an era for the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District (formely the Vernon Township Fire Protection District) as they recently sold their two remaining Seagrave units. What was an all Seagrave department many years ago now has a full Pierce fleet. One of the units sold was the 1996 Seagrave 100′ rear-mount quint that was replaced last year at Station 53 by a new Pierce unit. The second unit sold was Engine 51R, a 1992 Seagrave with a 1,500-GPM pump and 1,000 gallons of water.
This unit was replaced by a 2011 Pierce Arrow XT 105′ rear mount. It was purchased by the Mount Washington Fire Department in Kentucky.
Truck 53 was sold to the Mount Washington Fire Protection District in Kentucky.
This unit was most recently Engine 51R and was sold to the Locke Township Fire Department in Salisbury, NC.

Prior to the current Lincolnshire-Riverwoods apparatus fleet were several Seagrave units. When these units were purchased, the department name was the Vernon Township Fire Protection District.

Bill Friedrich submitted images of the Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District apparatus that has been missing from the site. Included are the shift commander buggy, two utilities, and the long awaited 1993 X-Bartlett Seagrave with the new paint job. (it’s third life-time color scheme)

When the Seagrave was repainted black over red to reflect a changeover in the apparatus fleet, it was in service as Engine 662. The new lettering no longer included "Countryside" as part of the district's name. Larry Shapiro photo
The Seagrave was originally Engine 612 when it was delivered in 1993. At that time, the entire Bartlett fleet was painted yellow and the lettering displayed Bartlett & Countryside Fire protection District. Larry Shapiro collection

Winthrop Harbor sits along Lake Michigan in the northeast corner of MABAS Division 4 along the Wisconsin border. They operate out of one station which is part of the municipal building with the police department. Packed full of apparatus, the four-bay station houses nine pieces of equipment. They are one of the only all Seagrave departments in Illinois with two engines and a 75′ Meanstick quint. Dating back to their long history of FWD rigs, they had FWD logos affixed to all of their modern Seagrave units. All of their equipment with the exception of the ambulances are painted white.
Winthrop Harbor has this restored 1949 FWD engine which is used in parades. The engine made the trip to Clintonville, WI for the Seagrave 125th anniversary.

Firefighters make the most of a bad situation with a 'No Wake Zone' sign outside the Garden Homes Fire Protection District station this morning. Dennis McGuire, Jr. photo
This morning’s heavy rains inundated several south suburbs. Among the areas that sustained damage was the Garden Homes Fire Protection District. The area around and inside the station had roughly 8-inches of standing water. Dennis McGuire, Jr. submitted several images and a link to Fox News who did a story from the fire station.

Scott Bluhm, of the Garden Homes Fire Protection District, said the volunteer fire department, which depends on donations, had about two feet of water that destroyed equipment and computers. He said though it floods often, this time was the worst he had seen.

Apparatus photos dating back to 1958 representing the Wilmette Fire Department have been assembled into a gallery which is accessible through the ‘Historic Photos’ button on the pages depicting the Wilmette stations. Images to date are from Bill Friedrich, Karl Klotz, and Larry Shapiro plus several from the collection of Jeff Schielke.
In years past the fleet consisted of Seagrave apparatus and then beginning in the 1980s the department started to move the fleet to include units built by E-ONE. Today, as in years past, Wilmette staffs two stations, though the manner in which they run apparatus has changed. The west station, Station 2 runs an engine plus an ambulance and is home to the spare engine. The headquarters station has a battalion chief, an ambulance, and a tower ladder. On any given day if they are at full manning, the squad will be put into service to chase the ambulance. In reserve at this station is another tower ladder which insures that they will always have a tower in service regardless of maintenance or other issues that require taking the frontline piece out of service.
Throughout the 70s and into the mid-80s Wilmette had two trucks on the roster like they do today. They ran a 1962 Seagrave mid-mount ladder truck and a 1975 Seagrave 55′ Snorkel.
Sadly, we don’t as of yet have images of the Cadillac ambulances.
