Karl Klotz, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro visited all five stations of the McHenry Township FPD last week to update the site. In addition to new units, this is one of many area departments that is in the process of renumbering apparatus.
Among the new and updated units photographed; there were three ambulances, two engines, two tenders, and a new boat.
McHenry Twp Tender 1272 is one of two twin units. These were built by US Tanker on 2013 IHC 7500 chassis with an extended cab. They carry 3,500 gallons of water and have a 500-GPM pump. Larry Shapiro photo
Two Pierce engines have been put into service since our last update and one was moved. The new engines are on the Impel XM chassis instead of the Velocity.

The Northbrook Fire Department received a call this evening reporting a barn fire at 2500 Pfingsten Road at the corner of Highland Road. The first unit on the scene was Glenview Engine 8 who confirmed a working fire in a commercial garage belonging to the Wilson Lawn & Landscape Company. They pulled a line and were soon joined by Northbrook Tower 12 and other Northbrook units. The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 which brought trucks from Northfield and Glenview, a Lincolnshire-Riverwoods ambulance, and additional Northbrook companies.

As the fire spread throughout the garage, companies pulled back and initiated a defensive attack which included an elevated master stream from Tower Ladder 12.

Tim Olk was on the scene right behind the first companies and submitted several images, with more to be posted HERE.
Larry Shapiro arrived roughly 20 minutes later and submitted images as well. Larry’s gallery is HERE and a video is forthcoming.

Josh Boyajian, Martin Nowak, Ron Heal, and Bill Friedrich steered us towards the following new deliveries from Pierce:
Thornton Engine 777 is a 2012 Pierce Arrow XT with a 1,250-GPM pump and 750 gallons of water. Ron Heal photo
With this new engine, Thornton becomes the first area department to sport this silver/gray over red paint scheme.
Rockford also received this quint for Quint 1. It is a 2012 Pierce Velocity with a 105′ rear mount aerial, a 1,500-GPM pump and 300 gallons of water. Ron Heal photo
Rockford received two other pierce quints for Quint 5 and 9 earlier this year.
This tower ladder replaces the unit that was lost when the fire station burned earlier this year.

John Tulipano took in a general alarm this afternoon in West Chicago:
Well for once I was in the right place at the right time, I was behind West Chicago Station 1 when the general alarm came in. I followed the (3) buggies and TL6 to the fire. Not much to see, it was some type of fire in a research lab at Ball Seed. Initial reports was an incuibator on the 2nd floor.

Firegeezer.com has an article which details several recalls that deal with fire service vehicles. Recalls involve Daimler Trucks, Pierce, Spartan Motors, and Ford. Some highlights include:
Spartan is recalling (NHTSA #11V-240) certain 2010 and 2011 Furions, Gladiators and MetroStars. Certain telltales (dash indicator lights) do not illuminate when they are intended to (high beam indicator, turn signal indicators), or they flicker. In addition, the ABS lamp may not illuminate when the system is affected by a fault.
Pierce has two recalls in. One, NHTSA #11V255, is for certain 1999 – 2008 Arrow XT, Dash, Lance and Enforcer chassis and equipped with an electronic accelerator pedal. After repeated use with “excessive force” (ed. note: who, us?), the accelerator pedal arm may bend and cause the pedal to move closer to the floor. If the pedal arm bends far enough, the pedal may contact the cab floor without warning and stick in the full throttle position.
Pierce is also recalling (NHTSA #11V-230) certain 2009 – 2011 Arrow XT and Velocity apparatus. The front axles of these vehicles were built with Michelin 365/70R22.5 XZA tires installed on 12.25 inch wide wheels. These tires require 10.5 inch wide wheels to comply with FMVSS #120.
The full article with more in depth information can be found HERE.

A fire which apparently started on this rear porch travelled up the exterior of this townhouse and into the common attic. Shaun Unell photo
Schaumburg firefighters were called to a house at 620 Del Largo Drive at approximately 11:40AM last Saturday for a fire in a townhouse. Long Grove Firefighter Shaun Unell took in the fire and submitted several images from the scene. He reports that the fire apparently started on the back porch of the unit and traveled up the exterior wall where it extended into the common attic for two other units.

Engine 52 was first to arrive as they were only a few blocks away when the call came in. Firefighters on the scene made a good knock down. Schaumburg went to a box alarm for change of quarters only as they were running multiple calls at the same time as the fire.

The air temperature was around 94-degrees at the time with no respite from a hot sun. The resident was home at the time of the fire and neighbors alerted her to the fire. It looks like neighbors also tried to use a garden hose to put the fire out with no success.
