Fatal 2-Alarm fire in West Chicago, 4-17-19

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

A man died and another was transported to a hospital after a house fire in West Chicago Wednesday night.

Three people were in a three-story house in the 100-block of West Grand Lake Boulevard in West Chicago when a fire broke out at about 10 p.m. Wednesday night. Fire officials believe the fire began in the front of the home and was made worse by the wind and open windows. The porch collapsed and the rest of the home was destroyed.

Firefighters were able to get a 92-year-old man from a second floor bedroom to safety. He was taken to a local hospital. His ex-daughter-in-law who lives with him got out on her own. The woman’s 53-year-old boyfriend died in an upstairs bedroom. Someone driving by the house saw it on fire and started banging on the doors, but by that time the flames had a head start.

The DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force is listing the cause of the fire as undetermined because at this point they cannot rule out an electrical cause. They do not believe it is suspicious.

Technical rescue/recovery in Geneva, 2-3-17

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has opened an investigation into the death of a 47-year-old West Dundee man who was killed Friday while installing a sign on a tower at Geneva Commons.

“A worker was crushed while he was in his aerial lift while he was working on a sign,” said OSHA spokesman Scott Allen. “We do have two OSHA compliance officers at the scene. We’re conducting interviews with potential witnesses, the employer and employees.”

Authorities said Donald J. Tentler, 47, was killed in the accident, which occurred at about 11:48 a.m. Friday. Tentler and another worker were at the top of the bell tower.

Firefighters found Tentler unconscious and unresponsive, and he was later pronounced dead at the scene. The other worker was able to walk down a fire truck ladder, but it took three hours to remove Tentler’s body from the bell tower.

“It seems to be some kind of mechanical malfunction. Whether it was human error or mechanical (failure), I don’t know,” Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said. “The worker was pinned by the lifting device.”

Fire agencies assisting Geneva at the scene included St. Charles, West Chicago, and Batavia.

3-Alarm fire in West Chicago, 11-10-14

This from John Tulipano:

On November 10, 2014 at approximately 11:05am West Chicago FPD was dispatched to a reported house fire at 28w649 Hickory Lane. First arriving company Batt 6 reported smoke from a house.

When I arrived fire was venting out the 2nd floor of the home along the mansard roof line. The house was a 2-story frame approximately 50×50 with a mansard style roof around the entire house from 2nd floor to approximately three feet above the ground.
Companies advanced through the front door and within several minutes fire had dropped down the inside of the mansard. There was fire around the entry door, and command removed all companies from inside and an exterior attack began. The fire traveled left around the east and south side of the house, companies worked very hard to try and stay ahead of the fire as they pulled and opened up the mansard there seemed to be fire ahead of them.
It took about 45 minutes to bring the fire under control.
Apparently a work was sweating pipes inside the first floor of the home.
more photos to follow.
