The Daily Herald has a follow-up story about the residents of the house fire in West Chicago on Thursday:
Carlee Martino didn’t have much time to react when she woke up from a nap to the sound of her mother screaming that their West Chicago house was on fire. Just moments later, Martino stood outside with her mother, father, three brothers and four family pets to watch the smoke and flames consume all their belongings.
But it wasn’t so much her clothes, computer and furnishings that Martino mourned after Thursday afternoon’s fire. It was the loss off her school supplies. Martino is in her second semester at Elgin Community College’s nursing program. It costs about $1,000 in books and supplies each semester to get through the program. That doesn’t factor in the cost of tuition and getting to and from school.
That’s where Brittany Von Eyser is hoping to help. Von Eyser is one of Martino’s classmates in the program. Shortly after learning about Martino’s needs, she began an online fundraiser to help her friend get enough money to replace her nursing supplies and obtain some basic clothes to get to school.
A cause for the fire has not yet been determined. Von Eyser said the Martino family are staying at a grandfather’s home in Bloomingdale while the fire is investigated. No one was seriously injured in the fire but the residence is considered a total loss.

Pictures from Don Tessler of the house fire in West Chicago on Thursday that injured four.
West Chicago companies with automatic aid from other West Suburban Fire Alliance units responded to a reported house fire this afternoon at 2485 Alamance Drive. Du-Comm received multiple calls, some reporting that all residents were not out of the house. Companies reported a large header while en route and the alarm was upgraded to a Special Alarm (working fire). Upon arrival, all residents were found to have exited the two-story home which was fully involved.
Firefighters went to work and were soon ordered out of the house as a flashover occurred. Three people were transported to area hospitals including one firefighter with minor burns from the flashover and two civilians. The attack went defensive with two hand lines and the West Chicago tower ladder.
Elliott Tulipano submitted some images from early in the event and we will have other images to post as well.
