Homewood Acres Volunteer Fire Dept. history

This from Mike Summa:

Found this on the HAVFD facebook.  Caption reads photo taken in 1950.  I do not know what chassis this is built on, or what size of the pump.  But, I guess volunteers make due with what they can lay their hands on.  And this truck must have suited them for the time.
Enjoy and comment.

Fire departments train in vacant house

This from Dennis McGuire, Jr.

The Alsip Fire Department along with the Garden Homes Fire Protection District and the Homewood Acres Fire Protection District had a burn down in Alsip, Illinois at 120th St. and Hamlin Ave.
All of the departments performed numerous small training evolutions in the house before having the final burn down. I arrived towards the end and was able to capture the final wrap up of a month long process.

Homewood Acres VFD

A brief and perhaps odd article appeared in the Southtown Star about the Homewood Acres VFD.

Homewood Acres a fire department in name only, but officials hope to change

If there’s a fire in the tiny, unincorporated community of Homewood Acres, no one counts on the Homewood Acres Volunteer Fire Department for help.

It’s been several years since the single-station company has been able to respond to a fire in the one-square-mile area nestled between Country Club Hills and Homewood. Some of its firefighters are not state-certified, the department itself lacks certification from the Illinois State Fire Marshal, and it is caught in an ugly political brawl between the department’s former and current leadership.

The article is HERE.

thanks Dennis

Homewood Acres FPD update

Dennis McGuire, Jr. stopped by the Homewood Acres Fire Department on Tuesday and submitted several images along with some information about the department.

Notes: The department is NOT up and running yet but they are working towards it. Training is under way and currently they have 15 volunteers.

The old Engine 1932 (1972 Ford-John Bean) has been sold to a gentleman in Grant Park, Illinois who owns a pawn shop in Flossmoor. It’s leaving tomorrow morning (5-30) and will be kept in Grant Park and driven to the pawn shop for use as advertising.(As a note, the Ford has a gas motor). This rig had quite a history; X-East Joliet FPD, X-Holbrook FPD, and X-Glenwood, Illinois, in that order.

The new Engine 1932 is the 1985 Ford/Pierce from Plainfield, Illinois. They haven’t decided if it will be painted or left white.

The other Ford from Country Club Hills was scrapped a few months ago, and was replaced by a 1986 Mack/Ward 79 pumper from Burbank, Illinois (X-Engine 208).

One of the pictures I sent is all three rigs lined up, makes for an interesting shot.

Homewood Acres receives engine

This from Keith Grzadziel:

I just passed the Homewood Acres station and spotted another “new” engine parked alongside the X-Burbank Mack. It is the X-Plainfield Engine 1912, a Ford C8000/Pierce. Not sure of the year or GPM but I know it has a 1000 gal capacity. Sorry about the crude pics I attached, but its a sneak peek. Have a safe holiday weekend!

Bill Friedrich submitted images of the Homewood Acres VFD in MABAS Division 24. This is a volunteer department with two used 1972 engines on Ford chassis. One engine is on it’s fourth life with Homewood Acres.
