CFD Apparatus History – trucks with boosters 1967

The Chicago Fire Department purchased aerial ladder trucks with booster tanks and pumps for several years. Beginning in 1967 and spanning through 1973, 21 aerials were delivered from different manufacturers with water on-board. One of these was a mid-ship aerial and the balance were rear-mounts. Units were built by Seagrave, Pirsch, Ward LaFrance (Grove), and American LaFrance.

This is the first of several posts that will highlight the progression of these truck companies in Chicago.

In 1967, Chicago received two Seagrave mid-ship aerials…

… one was a straight truck (assigned first to Truck 44 and then to Truck 60) and the other (Shop #E-166) had a 60-GPM pump and carried 200 gallons of water. This unit was originally assigned to Truck 26, and then to Truck 31.

Chicago received this 1967 Seagrave aerial that was assigned as Truck Company 26 and then Truck Company 31 (as lettered here). It had a 60-GPM pump and 200 gallons of water. Jack Connors photo

When Truck 31 moved into the house at 77th and Pulaski, there was no engine company with them. They were assigned a fog pressure unit as Truck 31A on November 17, 1971 until Engine 64 was located with them on March 12, 1973.

Chicago new apparatus assignments – update

The fifth new Spartan/Crimson 103′ rear mount aerial in Chicago will be assigned to Truck 59. That makes Truck Companies 9, 31, 51, 56, & 59 the recipients of the five aerials that have been delivered to date. Each of these companies currently runs with a 1996 Seagrave except Truck 51, which has a 1995 Seagrave, the oldest ladder in front line service in Chicago. After these new rigs go into service, there will be two remaining 1996 Seagrave trucks that are assigned to Trucks 61 and 62.

As a side note, there are three 1996 HME 1871/Simon-LTI 100′ tower ladders currently assigned to Tower 21, Tower 37, and Tower 39. Due to an accident with their 2002 Pierce Dash Tower Ladder, Tower 34 is running again with their 1988 E-ONE Hurricane 95′ tower ladder.

New Crimson aerial for CFD Truck 31

Steve Redick happened upon the new Spartan Gladiator/Crimson aerial lettered for Truck 31 today at the Quinn Fire Academy and sent this image. Truck 31 is quartered with Engine 64, an ALS engine company. In a previous post HERE, this unit was shown without a company number, but it was labeled as a paramedic equipped truck, and now that designation has been removed.
