Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire 8-21-13

This from Drew Gresik:

Took in the Still and Box at 2324 S. California. Fire was in a vacant 2.5-story frame, ops went defensive around the time these photos were taken. Tower 5 was moved into Sector 1 and Squad 1’s Snorkel was working with a master stream in Sector 2. Fire appeared to be in the attic/second floor. I didn’t see any flames but there was a lot of smoke. Here’s a few shots.

Chicago 2-11 Alarm Fire 8-3-13 (more)

This from Eric Haak:

Here are a few of my shots from the 2-11 at the corner of Harrison & Spaulding.  Engine 107 was first due and is shown parked on Spaulding.  The rear wall collapsed within the first 15 minutes of 107’s arrival.  Also shown is Engine 44 which was feeding Tower Ladder 5 on Harrison just west of Spaulding.  Also seen are 2 images of sector 1 of the auto detailing shop.  There were two overhead doors in sector 1.  In one image, there was a 1960’s vintage Cadillac parked right behind that door.  The fourth image is just after a portion of the roof collapsed.

Chicago working fire 3-30-13

This from Josh Boyajian:

Chicago Companies had a working fire today @ 1356 s Fairfield. Engine 107 had a 2 sty vacant “Red X” building with fire in the rear and attic. 107 had two lines lead out as well as the use of their deck gun. Squad 1 was flowing water from the snorkel for a while. Companies never entered the building. Here are some of my pictures.

CFD Apparatus History – Ward LaFrance (1967)

In 1967, the Chicago Fire Department was badly in need of new engines. They looked to Ward LaFrance for assistance in acquiring what they had available. Chicago received four engines. One was assigned to Engine 42 (D-327) with a 1,000-GPM pump and 500 gallons of water. (this would later be re-assigned to Engine 46)

Shop #D-327 was later reassigned to Engine Company 46. Large company number decals were added to the engine. Jack Connors photo

The other three units were delivered with 1,250-GPM pumps and 350-gallon water tanks and were assigned to Engine 34 (D-332), Engine 54 (D-333), and Engine 11 (D-334).

Engine 34 received one of three 1967 Ward LaFrance pumpers with the larger 1,250-GPM pump and a smaller water tank. This image was taken after the shops added white decals that made the company unit number easier to read. Jack Connors photo

These units differed from the first piece that went to Engine 42. The body is taller, the pump panel has a polished backing instead of being painted and there are no flood lights. The cab has several different features including an extended bumper with a bell, siren, and front intake. The cab face underneath the windshield is covered with a panel to protect the paint from being scratched. Additionally, the rear of the cab canopy has a completely different shape than the earlier and subsequently later styles as well.

Shop #D-333 which was originally assigned to Engine 54 was later assigned to Engine 99 and then again to Engine 107. Unlike the other 1,250-GPM engines, this rig was delivered with one flood light.

Chicago 3-11 Alarm fire 12-27-11

Chicago companies were dispatched to a reported fire Tuesday evening at 2626 W. Roosevelt Road, a vacant, block long building bounded by Washtenaw and the railroad tracks. Engine 107 whose house is around the corner was first on the scene and reported fire on the second floor. Battalion 4 requested a still and box alarm reporting a two-story, large brick warehouse. Early on the fire fight went defensive with elevated master streams and a deck gun from Engine 107. The fire was upgraded to a 2-11 within about 20 minutes and a 3-11 was requested a half hour later by 2-1-22 when there were no longer companies in the staging area. A Level I Haz Mat was also requested after the 3-11 was in. Tower Ladder 5, Tower Ladder 10 and Squad 1’s Snorkel were working with master streams on Roosevelt Road. Roughly an hour into the fire companies began moving inside to hit the remaining spot fires before the fire was struck out between around 9:30PM.

Chicago 2-11 5-28-11

Chicago responded to a reported fire in a church at 3450 W. 15th Street around 6AM this morning. First arriving units encountered heavy smoke and fire in a 50×150 2 1/2-story brick church and immediately requested a Box Alarm. Tower Ladder 5 and Squad 1 went to work right away before a special call was made for the reserve Snorkel. Fire was traveling fro the front towards the rear of the structure and a 2-11 Alarm was sounded.

Companies made quick work of knocking down the fire and preventing further spread. The majority of the 2-11 companies were never used.

Gordon J. Nord, Jr., Tim Olk, and Steve Redick went to the scene though the fire was basically out prior to any of them arriving. Tim and Steve submitted several images.

Chicago Still & Box 5-17-11

Steve Redick took in a Still & Box Alarm last night at 3636 Grenshaw. The fire originated on the back porches of a three-story 6 flat unit which appeared to be vacant. Engine 107 was the second engine in and was ordered to the rear where they opened up with their deck gun to knock done the bulk of the fire before taking a hydrant at the end of the alley.
