Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire 8-21-13

This from Drew Gresik:

Took in the Still and Box at 2324 S. California. Fire was in a vacant 2.5-story frame, ops went defensive around the time these photos were taken. Tower 5 was moved into Sector 1 and Squad 1’s Snorkel was working with a master stream in Sector 2. Fire appeared to be in the attic/second floor. I didn’t see any flames but there was a lot of smoke. Here’s a few shots.

Chicago FD Still & Box Alarm 8-11-13

This from Eric Haak on the Still & Box Alarm fire yesterday on Blue Island Avenue:

About 1150 hrs on Sunday, Engine 23 reported they had smoke from the roof of a 2-story, 400 x 100 commercial structure just off the corner of Blue Island and Damen.  The building is part of the large production complex for Hofmeister Hams.  The fire was boxed just after noon by the 4th Battalion.  First arriving companies worked a line on the roof along with a 2 1/2 that went interior.  The fire was brought under control fairly quickly.  Companies on the still were Engine 23 & Tower Ladder 5, Engine 18 and Truck 8 with Battalion 2 and Truck 32 as RIT.  I did not see any of the box engines used as they were staged down on Cermak.  There were roofers working on the building but I did not hear of any definitive causes.  The first photo below was taken about 10 minutes after first companies arrived.

Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire 8-11-13

This from Steve Redick:

Today, 2386 Blue island Ave.; Roof fire on a commercial building. It appears roofers were working with torches, I assume on some kinda multi-ply roofing. Some moderate smoke for a bit, lots of roof work. TL 5 reported making something like 7 or 8 vent holes in the roof. The building was sprinklered and as you can see in the photos the siamese was charged, early in the incident. Several handlines were used interior from what I could tell. An interesting job, and pretty tough on the members doing the work.

The video will be on youtube here:  http://youtu.be/NAWhWfwTVyg

Chicago 2-11 Alarm Fire 8-3-13 (more)

This from Eric Haak:

Here are a few of my shots from the 2-11 at the corner of Harrison & Spaulding.  Engine 107 was first due and is shown parked on Spaulding.  The rear wall collapsed within the first 15 minutes of 107’s arrival.  Also shown is Engine 44 which was feeding Tower Ladder 5 on Harrison just west of Spaulding.  Also seen are 2 images of sector 1 of the auto detailing shop.  There were two overhead doors in sector 1.  In one image, there was a 1960’s vintage Cadillac parked right behind that door.  The fourth image is just after a portion of the roof collapsed.

At approximately 8AM this morning the Chicago Fire Department received a report of black smoke coming from a four-story warehouse at 1427 W. 37th Street. First arriving companies reported a fire and the alarm was elevated to a 2-11 within minutes. A 3-11 was struck roughly a half hour later which was struck out around 9:30AM. Three tower ladders and the Snorkel from Squad 1 were all working along with one multi-versal and hand lines. Seven engines (19, 28, 29, 39, 49, 50, and 65) were working at the scene as well.

55-gallon drums were stacked throughout the building prompting a Haz Mat Level I, though the barrels were empty. Larry Shapiro photo

A Level I Haz Mat was requested when companies discovered stacks of 55-gallon drums inside the building, but the drums turned out to be empty as the building’s occupant is a manufacturer of industrial drums and containers.
