North Chicago Gets Grant for New Hires

The North Chicago Fire Department received a FEMA grant allowing for the hire of five new firefighters. The Lake County News-Sun has a brief article HERE with a photo now that the personnel have been hired.

Five new North Chicago firefighter/paramedics were sworn in on Monday, May 20, and the new hires aren’t costing the city a cent.

Their salaries for the first two years of employment will be paid for through $832,741 in federal grant money, an amount that will also pay the first three years for a sixth firefighter, a veteran of the U.S. Army, who will be sworn in at a later date.

Previous mention of the grant is HERE.

Barrington Countryside FPD update

For several months, we have been following the discussions between the Village of Barrington and the Barrington Countryside FPD regarding their relationship. Previous articles are HERE, HERE, HEREHERE and HERE..

The Daily Herald has a recent article stating that the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District is looking to hire personnel.

According to Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District trustees, questions over their proposed year-end split with the Barrington Fire Department have changed from theoretical to practical — from “why?” to “how?”

That means starting a process by which the fire district — a separate taxing body — will begin acquiring its own staff and equipment rather than receiving them by contract from the village of Barrington.

As far as the staff goes, district President Tom Rowan said requests for proposals have already gone out seeking 33 employees from a chief on down who will be ready to take over from Barrington Fire Department workers on Jan. 1.

While the Barrington Fire Department was originally created to serve only the village of Barrington, the fire district covers a larger area just outside it that includes portions of Barrington Hills, Inverness, Lake Barrington, South Barrington and unincorporated Cook, Lake and McHenry counties.

Fire Station 1 in Barrington will remain the Barrington Fire Department’s, but a split would leave the fire district with Station 2 in Barrington Hills as well as Station 3.

The agreement between the two agencies spells out an even division of the equipment they co-own — to be started with a coin flip, Rowan said.

Notice of a Dec. 31, 2013, end to their long-running contract was given last fall after district trustees said they’d become frustrated by the village’s refusal to supply the levels of equipment and staff the district requested.

But Barrington Village President Karen Darch on Monday said she doesn’t think the relationship is beyond repair. She said adequate time remains for any and all business still required between them.

However, Rowan believes the only discussion remaining is the calling of “heads” or “tails” to start dividing the equipment.

New ladder truck for Huntley

This from Larry Shapiro:

I visited the Spartan ERV aerial plant in Ephrata, PA on Monday. The new quint for Huntley was out back having the stress test performed on the aerial ladder. Here are several photos. The unit will be shipped to South Dakota any day now (if it hasn’t already left) to have the pump module and body mounted for completion. It is a 103′ rear mount in a Spartan Gladiator chassis with the Evolution facia.

Antioch Fire Department to provide EMS in the village

The following announcement was posted to the Antioch Fire Department website:

By Fire Chief John Nixon

May 24, 2013

The Village of Antioch voted at a special board meeting on May 23rd to begin providing ambulance services to the residents of the village directly under the direction of the Antioch Fire Department. Superior Air Ground Ambulance Service, Inc. was awarded a six month contract to provide two fully equipped ambulances and four on-duty fire and EMS personnel beginning June 1st. This action was necessary as a result of the sudden departure by the village’s former EMS provider, the Antioch Rescue Squad. At the May 20th village board meeting ARS declined an offer from the village board to extend their contract to serve village residents and businesses for another six months. Antioch Fire Department will now be the responsible agency for delivery of fire and paramedics services to the community. In addition to the already equipped ALS Engines, fire department ambulances will be placed at fire station 1 on Holbek Drive and fire station 2 on Deep Lake Road to serve village residents.

The call came in to the Mendota Fire Department at 6:57 p.m. of a structure fire at 205 Sandra Ave., Building B. Firemen arrived on the scene just eight minutes later. Upon arrival, fire and thick black smoke were visible from the roof area of the building.

New fire chief in Waukegan

The Lake County News-Sun has an article introdcing a new fire chief for the Waukegan Fire Department.

Two weeks after taking office and immediately naming a new police chief and city attorney, Mayor Wayne Motley brought change to the fire chief’s post on Monday, May 20, by accepting the resignation of Dan Young and replacing him with Ricco Farrell.

Farrell, a 30-year veteran who most recently served as battalion chief, became Waukegan’s first African-American fire chief when he was sworn in during Monday night’s City Council meeting.

Antioch Rescue Squad update

Firegeezer.com has an article about the Antioch Rescue Squad and their negotiations with the Village of Antioch to continue providing emergency medical services to area residents.

Troubled Rescue Squad Slips Another Notch

THE ANTIOCH RESCUE SQUAD (ARS) based in the Village of Antioch in Lake County, Illinois, has had plenty of problems over the past year, just about all of them their fault.  And now they have helped create another one.

The ARS has been serving the Antioch Township for 72 years and is still an all-volunteer outfit covering the village as well as all the unincorporated areas of the township.  Their current contract with the village is due to expire soon and they approached the Village Board with a proposal to extend the current contract for another year.  On Monday night the board rejected the proposal and told the squad that they would agree to a 6-month extension instead.  For some reason, the squad was unhappy with that deal and told the village that they would not agree and their association with the village would be terminated on July 1.

The board, seemingly angered by the squad’s cavalier attitude responded with notice that their affiliation would end on June 1 instead.  Then the took immediate moves to line up a replacement service for the community.  This may include cooperating with the fire department to take control over the new operation.  The rescue squad will continue to serve the rest of the township.

The complete article with a summation of the various actions leading up to the current situation is HERE.

Chicago 2-11 Alarm at 1433 S Kenneth 5-23-13 (pt 2)

This from Dan McInerney:

Some photos from this morning’s 2-11 at 1433 S. Kenneth. I got there late after the fire had been pretty much put out. Fire was in a 3sty, vacant apartment building, marked with the ominous red “X”. Fire was mostly throughout the 3rd floor. A tower ladder, 5-5-2’s Snorkel, a mulitversal and a few handlines were used. Both TL14 and E99 had mechanical issues – E117 coming in on the 2-11 was tasked with replacing E99, and TL5 was sent for TL14. Attached are a couple of scene shots and a few rig shots.
The first 3 show the Snorkel and multiversal on the north side of the fire building

Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 5-23-13

This from Drew Gresik:

Hey guys,
I took in the 2-11 this morning at 1433 S Kenneth. I arrived roughly 50 minutes into the incident, and at the time, the incident was a Still and Box. After being on scene for about 10 minutes, 2-2-1 requested a 2-11 Alarm for the heavy fire pushing throughout. A lot of commissioners took this one in too, including 2-1-3, Commissioner Jose Santiago. This fire also occurred during shift change so there were a lot of firefighters switching into gear and moving rigs around. Another interesting note is that there was a LOT of spare rigs at this incident, companies with spares include: Towers 5 and 14, Trucks 26 and 36, and another Truck and Engine (I think Engine 109 and Truck 29). Thanks, enjoy the pics!
Drew Gresik

PS Tower 5 was using E252 and Tower 14 was using E248. (Tower 5 backed into the vacant lot in Sector 4 and took over master stream ops for Tower 14…Squad 2’s Snorkel was also used as a master stream). E279 was being used by Truck 26 and was also in the lot next to the towers.
