The Zion Fire Department along with mutual aid companies responded to a fire early this morning at 1817 Kenosha Road. Upon arrival, they found a substantial fire behind the large manufacturing facility located at that address. Thick black smoke filled the air from many tightly packed cardboard bales and containers filled with plastic pellets.
Contributors Tim Olk, Jeff Rudolph, and Larry Shapiro all went to the scene. Tim has submitted several images from rather early in the fire. Images and video will follow from Jeff and Larry.
Tim has more images HERE.

Police officers reportedly spotted a fire early this morning at the Happyland Pet Store located at 11432 W. Wadsworth Road in Beach Park. First arriving companies found heavy smoke the the alarm was upgraded very quickly.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that:
The Beach Park Fire Department said firefighters were called to the building that houses the Happyland Pet Center, 11432 W. Wadsworth Road, at 6:06 a.m.
Initial reports said a person was trapped in one of the apartments above the store, but all residents of the building were able to escape the fire.
The Chicago Tribune has an article which states that:
A Beach Park pet store was completely destroyed this morning after a blaze broke out in the basement and killed hamsters, gerbils, fish and reptiles, officials said.
Firefighters were alerted about 6 a.m. to the Happyland Pet Center located at 11432 W. Wadsworth Rd. and found heavy smoke, said Beach Park Fire Department Chief Paul Tierney.
Firefighters went into rescue mode and searched the upstairs of the structure when a flashover occurred. A water supply issue at the scene slowed down firefighting efforts and assisting companies were called in from 15 surrounding communities including Waukegan, Zion and Newport, Tierney said. About 75 firefighters were called to the scene.
“The fire had been burning for quite some time before we were called,” said Tierney. He added the fire originated in a concrete bunker-type basement that had only one entrance.
Jeff Rudolph, Tim Olk, and Larry Shapiro all went to the scene. Jeff arrived shortly after the 2nd Alarm was pulled and submitted several images.
A gallery of Jeff’s images is available HERE. Tim Olk has images available for viewing HERE. Larry Shapiro has a gallery which can be viewed HERE.
More images and a video will be added later.

Four fire departments in Lake County, MABAS Division 4, have had non-red fire apparatus over the years. To date, only the Fox Lake Fire Department and the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department maintain fleets that are not red, red & white, or red & black.
The fire department at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in North Chicago used to run apparatus that was either solid lime green or that later had a white roof. The military has since changed over to white over red … with the exception of some ARFF and other airport assigned units.
When the Lake Zurich Rescue Squad and the Lake Zurich Fire Department were separate entities, the rescue squad ran ambulances and a small squad unit. When they purchased this unit in 1979, there was federal funding provided to help with the cost. One stipulation though was that the squad had to be painted white over lime green, which at the time was considered a matter of safety with regards to the visibility of the unit.
The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District purchased two Mack CF engines; one in 1968 and the other in 1975. Both were painted white.
The Waukegan apparatus has always been red or red and white with a few exceptions. In 1979, they purchased a DOT spec’d small squad just like the one that was bought by the Lake Zurich Rescue Squad. Additionally, they purchased a 1969 Ward LaFrance Model P80 engine on an Ambassador chassis that was white over lime green which was typical of the Ward LaFrance units being shipped during that era. They went on to purchase three more units from Ward LaFrance in 1976 and 1977, all of which were white over red.

Winthrop Harbor sits along Lake Michigan in the northeast corner of MABAS Division 4 along the Wisconsin border. They operate out of one station which is part of the municipal building with the police department. Packed full of apparatus, the four-bay station houses nine pieces of equipment. They are one of the only all Seagrave departments in Illinois with two engines and a 75′ Meanstick quint. Dating back to their long history of FWD rigs, they had FWD logos affixed to all of their modern Seagrave units. All of their equipment with the exception of the ambulances are painted white.
Winthrop Harbor has this restored 1949 FWD engine which is used in parades. The engine made the trip to Clintonville, WI for the Seagrave 125th anniversary.

Jeff Rudolph took in a fire this morning in Winthrop Harbor, in MABAS Division 4 and submitted the following information and photos:
Winthrop Harbor had a box this morning around 0800 for a fire at 11905 12th St. Fire was on the roof of a 1.5 story house, possibly from lightning. Zion Quint 1832 was first in and made the attack. Winthrop Harbor Engine 1711 laid in a supply line. Auto aid was from Newport, Beach Park, and Zion. The box was struck out quickly and companies returned enroute except for North Chicago, and Pleasant Prairie,WI.

As the Chicago area saw it’s first snow of the season, area fire departments responded to many accidents. Jeff Rudolph took in a two-car, head-on collision this morning at Route 173 west of Delaney Road in Wadsworth, IL. The Newport Township FPD responded with several units and was aided by Zion and Winthrop Harbor. Six patients were transported with what did not appear to be life-threatening injuries.
Jeff Rudolph recently set up a Flickr site to showcase his photography. His images which include on-scene and static apparatus from more than just the Chicago area can be seen HERE. Jeff has included images that date back many years.
