Fatal 2-Alarm fire in West Chicago, 4-17-19

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

A man died and another was transported to a hospital after a house fire in West Chicago Wednesday night.

Three people were in a three-story house in the 100-block of West Grand Lake Boulevard in West Chicago when a fire broke out at about 10 p.m. Wednesday night. Fire officials believe the fire began in the front of the home and was made worse by the wind and open windows. The porch collapsed and the rest of the home was destroyed.

Firefighters were able to get a 92-year-old man from a second floor bedroom to safety. He was taken to a local hospital. His ex-daughter-in-law who lives with him got out on her own. The woman’s 53-year-old boyfriend died in an upstairs bedroom. Someone driving by the house saw it on fire and started banging on the doors, but by that time the flames had a head start.

The DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force is listing the cause of the fire as undetermined because at this point they cannot rule out an electrical cause. They do not believe it is suspicious.

2-11 Alarm fire with a Mayday response in Chicago, 3-31-19

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Two Chicago firefighters have been hospitalized after falling two stories through a hole in the third floor of an apartment building near Monroe Street and Albany Avenue.

The fire Sunday evening spread from the apartment building to a neighboring 1½-story building. A mayday call for trapped or injured firefighters was sent after the two firefighters fell all the way down to the first floor around 8:45 p.m. Saturday. One of the firefighters got out on his own, while colleagues helped the other to an ambulance. The firefighters, who were listed in serious-to-critical condition when they were transported, were both alert and talking Sunday night, though resting and likely to be kept for observation.

More than 100 firefighters and medics went to the scene. It appears the building did not have any working smoke detectors. No one seemed to be living on the second or third floors of the building, though there were people staying on the first floor.

This from Chi-Town Fire Photos:

Sunday night, the MFAO sent companies to a working fire @ 3104 W. Monroe Street. Upon arrival, Battalion 18 had a 3-sty brick, with heavy fire on the first, second, and third floors plus an exposure problem. A Still and Box was requested shortly after. Companies lead out 6+ hand lines and had two truck companies working the roof. For a short time, they had heavy fire venting through the roof and top floor. While working, multiple members fell through a hole in the floor which activated the Mayday Alert and 2-11. I believe the RIT team did remove one of the injured firefighters from the rear of building. Tough fire and a lot of work. Thankfully the injuries sustained were not life threatening. These photos began about 10 minutes into the fire.

Still and Box Alarm fire in Chicago, 3/12/19

This from Steve Redick:

Took this in around 2230 Tuesday night at 2258 S. Blue Island Avenue. It sounded promising. A metal clad warehouse butted up against another building. Interesting that the size-up was no exposure problem yet it seemed obvious that there was a high potential, in fact they reported  some fire in the adjoining building on fireground. TL 5 with the new rig as well as 28 with a new pumper and I guess what must be a spare command van.

Working fire in Prospect Heights, 12-28-18

This from the Prospect Heights Fire District:

Prospect Heights firefighters were dispatched at 25 minutes after midnight to a reported fire at 107 North Schoenbeck Road after a passerby spotted smoke coming from the roof area. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the building was charged with smoke and smoke was coming from multiple areas of the roof. A quick search of the building determined it was unoccupied and the fire was in the crawlspace. The fire was quickly extinguished without extension into the walls or ceiling.

During the initial fire attack, one firefighter fell through a hole in the floor into the crawlspace.  The firefighter was not injured and was immediately assisted out of the crawlspace.

Prospect Heights firefighters were assisted at the scene by Wheeling, Mt Prospect, Arlington Heights, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine Rural, Elk Grove Township, Des Plaines, and Long Grove  firefighters. This area of Prospect Heights is not serviced by hydrants so tankers from the Palatine Rural and the Elk Grove Township fire districts were requested to reinforce efforts.

The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Prospect Heights police were able to locate the homeowner who is not currently residing in the home apparently due to renovations underway. Much of the home sustained smoke and water damage.

As of 3:00AM the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

Excerpts from the Chicago.cbslocal.com:

Chicago firefighters responded to a fire in a two-story apartment building near 68th and Aberdeen in the Englewood neighborhood around 11:20 p.m. Thursday. Five people who live in the building got out unharmed before firefighters arrived.

About 20 minutes later, a mayday call went out when a firefighter fell through the floor. A short time later, he walked out of the building on his own. He not suffer any serious injuries.

“He was not transported. He was not injured. He was removed quickly by his company, and he continued to work, and he’s doing well,” Chicago Fire Deputy District Chief Rosalind Jones said.

Crews attacked the flames from the roof and the ground and the fire communicated to the building directly to the south.

Firefighters had the fire contained by about 1:45 a.m., but it rekindled around 6:15 a.m. while they were still on the scene to monitor hot spots.
