Minooka Fire Protection District news (more)

Excerpts from patch.com:

The motorist who collided with the Minooka Fire Protection District ambulance on the afternoon of May 23 has retained a law firm and filed a personal injury lawsuit. Plaintiff John Wnek’s lawsuit named ambulance driver Jacob Truhlar and the Minooka FPD as co-defendants.

The lawsuit noted that May 23, Truhlar operated the Minooka FPD ambulance going east on Wildy Road heading toward Ridge Road, while, Wnek was driving a car northbound on Ridge. The eastbound traffic for Wildy was controlled by a stop sign at Ridge Road.

According to the plaintiff, Truhlar was transporting a patient who was in stable condition and “whose medical condition upon transport to the hospital was not a bona fide or true emergency for which the deliberate disregard of traffic control standards was not required to reduce the seriousness of the situation nor authorized by a licensed physician.”

The lawsuit contends that Truhlar “made a conscious and deliberate decision to disregard the posted stop sign at the intersection of Wildy Road and Ridge Road and enter the intersection without reducing his speed or stopping,” that Truhlar was only 19 years old at the time and that the Minooka FPD “mandated that such personnel must be at least 20 years of age.”

The defendants in the lawsuit are accused of recklessly operating the ambulance at a speed in excess of 40 mph and in disregard of traffic laws and operating the ambulance without due regard for the safety of others.

The plaintiffs argue that Wnek sustained injuries of a personal and pecuniary nature as a result of the reckless acts of the defendants, and seek an unspecified monetary judgment against the Minooka FPD and Truhlar in Will County court.

Technical rescue in Minooka, 1-23-20

Excerpts from the NWherald.com:

The Minooka Fire Protection District received a call about 12:45 p.m. Thursday about a man buried to his waist in a grain bin on West Mondamin Street owned by Minooka Grain, Lumber & Supply Co. Firefighters worked through the early afternoon to remove grain from the silo in order to free the man shortly after 4 p.m. The man was rescued and feeling well. He was conscious and breathing while firefighters worked to free him.

About 20 fire departments assisted with the rescue. A Vac-Con vacuum truck at the scene removed grain from around the man so that he could be freed.

It only takes two or three seconds for a person to become trapped in flowing grain, and another 10 seconds to become completely submerged, according to the National Agricultural Safety Database’s website.

Minooka Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the herald-news.com:

The Minooka Fire Protection District was recognized this week by the State Fire Marshal’s Office for receiving an ISO Class 1 certification, the 21st fire department in Illinois to receive it. To receive the certification the district was graded on factors such as communication, training, and the water service in the area they serve. In the Minooka district’s case, that meant working with the villages of Minooka and Channahon to ensure water service met the standards.

Becoming an ISO Class 1 department took years of preparation and a couple visits from the grader. One of the benefits for the community could be lower insurance ratings.
