The second McCook, IL Seagrave has been found. This 1982 Seagrave 1250/500, former Engine 1411, is for sale at a used car lot in Lake Villa. You may remember the 79′ is now owned by the Lake Forest Fire Department as a parade unit.

Working fire in McCook, 3/27/15

This from Josh Boyajian:

McCook had a fire Friday (3/27/15) in a restaurant at 9507 Joliet Rd. It seemed as they had some fire in the walls that started in the kitchen. I attached some photos I took of some roof work in the back of the building. Companies working were, McCook’s squad, Forest View’s engine, Brookfield’s truck, a Pleasantview quint, and Riverside’s truck.

McCook residents vote to keep fire department

An article in the Des Plaines Valley News

Unless the vote changes at the official canvass, which McCook Mayor Jeff Tobolski said was unlikely, residents of the village rejected a plan to disband the fire department and join a fire protection district

The proposal ended in a 56-56 tie after the March 18 referendum. Ties between candidates are decided by a coin toss, but ballot questions must be approved by at least a single vote.

“If the numbers don’t change, and I don’t see any reason that they should, the referendum is defeated,” Tobolski said after last week’s election. “My job now is to mend fences and go back to the bargaining table with the firefighters,” he said. “We put forth a public question and the town said it wanted to keep a fire department.”

Tobolski said talks would resume with the firefighters union over a new contract. Tobolski said the issues he cited before the referendum are still in play. McCook firefighters are not trained paramedics and cannot offer advanced life-saving treatment and the department is a huge cost to maintain.

“We still have a million dollars worth of payroll,” he said.

Tobolski said there were other ways to outsource fire services, such as an intergovernmental agreement with a fire protection district, but he was not yet ready to go that route. “The voters said they did not want to join a fire protection district,” he said. “We’ll try to reach a fair contract with the firefighters.”

Turnout at last week’s referendum far outpaced the rest of the county at 64.2 percent, according to the Cook County Clerk’s office, with 113 of the town’s 176 registered voters heading to the polls. Countywide, turnout was about 15 percent.

Box Alarm in Lyons, 3-30-14

This from Eric Haak:

Here is a synopsis of rigs that were working at Lyons Box alarm on Maple Avenue Sunday.  I was too late to get anything else.  There were four rigs working on Maple in front of the fire building.  Lyons Engine 1312 was directly in front with McCook Engine 1411 directly north of them.  Riverside Truck 1629 was working directly to the south of 1312 and Bedford Park Truck 709 was set up directly to the south of them.  Lyons Engine 1316 had a hydrant on the corner of Maple and 41st Place.  From there, there was a long lead to the Cermak Quarry where Berwyn Engine 903 was drafting from the pond.  Forest View Engine 813 was originally set up in that position but was not pumping.  Finally, Lyons Engine 1311 had a hydrant at the corner of Joliet Road and Elm Avenue, a good 2-plus blocks south of the fire building.

McCook to shutdown fire department

This from the DesPlaines Valley News

McCook will ask voters this month to disband the village’s fire department and join the Pleasantview Fire Protection District.
“Because we have so little retail and we are stuck with an industrial tax base, we are no longer able to support a fire department,” said Jeff Tobolski, mayor of the village which has a population of only 228 as of the 2010 census.  Tobolski said the village has been managing a deficit of about $1.5 million for a number of years, but efforts to increase the retail base failed when Walmart pulled out of a plan a few years ago to build a Sam’s Club in town, which would have generated more than $1 million a year in taxes.Tobolski said the nine-person fire department costs the village $1.2 million per year.  He said everyone except the chief is a part-time firefighter and none of them is a trained paramedic.  “We offered to send two a year for paramedic training, but they did not embrace the idea,” he said.

Tobolski said the village notified the Teamsters union, which represents the firefighters, that it was going to ask to terminate the fire department and turn protection services over to the Pleasantview Fire District. The district is expected to maintain and staff the village’s firehouse.

“We will see significant savings by the move,” said Tobolski. “Our costs will go from $1.2 million to $200,000 in the first year.”

He said the fire district would provide better services including firefighter/paramedics instead of firefighter/EMTs as well as a better classification for insurance.  “Homeowners and businesses would see a savings on their insurance costs,” he said. The savings would depend on the fire district’s final rating after it absorbed the village’s service.
