3-Alarm fire at Proviso East High School in Maywood, 5-10-14

This from Steve Redick:

This was Proviso East High School at 807 S First Ave in Maywood, IL. From what I could see from the outside they had a fire in at least 1 classroom and it sounds like it spread vertically 1 or 2 floors. Long leadouts and I believe they added additional lengths once they were operating inside. Reports from the scene prior to my arrival indicated some heavy smoke conditions. The only aspect of the operation I was able to see was the deployment of MABAS MVU10, operated by the Lyons FD. These units are similar to those operated by the CFD. This is an old building, and presented some unusual tactical problems.

From the Chicago Tribune:

An extra-alarm fire broke out at Proviso East High School in Maywood on Saturday evening, causing damage and startling families gathered for a school play. No injuries were reported.

The fire was reported at about 9 p.m. at the west suburban high school, 807 South First Ave., and was elevated to a three-alarm fire at about 9:40 p.m., officials said.

Speaking at the scene about 11 p.m., Maywood Fire Chief Craig Bronaugh said the fire caused “substantial damage” but that there were no reports of injuries. The fire started in a social office on the second level of the school, said Bronaugh Sunday morning.

The cause of fire remained under investigation, Bronaugh said.

Down memory lane …

Another submission from Steve Redick:

This time we will have a suburban installment…

This was a box or 2nd alarm in the old Battalion 7 (Now division 20) … Maywood or Bellwood … not sure which. Some action photos … maybe someone will recognize some of the members in the photos. I always enjoyed the rigs, and always liked the ALF water chiefs, but I think they had lots of problems with the waterways.

Also a coupla shots from a fire in Glenview … a vacant supermarket. The Snorkel is the Glenbrook Snorkel before the rebuild.

Both sets were taken in the 80’s …

Stone Park 4-11 Alarm fire 5-28-13

This from Drew Gresik:

Hello everyone,
I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of submissions about this fire, so I’ll keep it short. Here are just a couple of more than 500 photos I took at this job in Stone Park. Fire was in a grocery store with occupied attached apartments, multiple master streams and handlines used. There were a lot of issues with bad hydrants as well, forcing command to request addition engines from many area departments. Thanks again guys.
From,
Drew Gresik

No injuries were reported following an extra-alarm fire that broke out in the potato chip aisle of a grocery store in west suburban Stone Park late this morning, authorities said.

The five-alarm blaze started about noon in the 1600 block of North Mannheim Road, according to a spokeswoman for Stone Park police.

As of about 1 p.m., the blaze was mostly out, but smoke and some flames were still visible from the 2-story brick building, which houses the Durango Supermercado on the first level and about four apartments on the upper level.

No injuries have been reported and the blaze burned through its roof, causing a partial collapse of the building.

Thick, black smoke roiled from the building at one point and about 15-20 fire departments remained on the scene.

Firefighters were pouring water on its roof and through one apartment window using two tower ladders.  Several onlookers were standing outside gawking and it appeared that all occupants of the building had escaped.

Manager Jose Rivera was in his office doing paperwork when he heard the smoke alarm go off but he said it’s “very sensitive” so he thought it could just have been cooking smoke that activated it.
When he went to check it out, he found the potato chip aisle was on fire, and the chips were burning.

Rivera sprang into action, grabbed the fire extinguisher and tried to put it out.

“I ran for the extinguisher and managed to control it,’’ Rivera said.

He then raced through the rest of the store, telling the eight customers to “drop their possessions and leave,’’ Rivera said.

Rivera went back inside but the fire had worsened and there was nothing left in the extinguisher. Rivera said he knew he had to leave at that point.Fire officials on the scene said they were letting the fire burn, in a “free burn’’ and would not be able to go inside until it was safe.Rivera’s mother, Imelda Rivera, who is the owner of the store, was outside and appeared very shaken up.

Occupants of the second-story apartments on the building’s south side escaped without being hurt.

Rivera does not know what started the blaze.

Fire department officials said they were performing a “free burn’’ and will not go inside until it’s safe.

Maywood 3rd Alarm fire 5-26-12

The Chicago Tribune reports that:

Between 20 and 25 people were displaced when two 3-story apartment buildings burned down in Maywood Friday night.

The 3-11 alarm fire on the 1000 block of 11th Avenue brought firefighters from a dozen surrounding communities as crews battled flames for about two hours, Maywood Fire Chief John Cadigan said.

The first alarm was sounded about 9:30 p.m. Investigators remained on the scene after midnight Saturday morning, Cadigan said. It was too early to say what caused the fire.

The complete article can be found HERE.

Steve Redick went to the scene and arrived after the fire was out. He submitted several images from the scene.

Maywood Box Alarm 2-19-12

The Maywood Fire Department fought a fire early Sunday morning in a vacant three-story building. Companies pulled a Box Alarm as they had heavy fire in the attic and on the top floor at 907 S. 3rd Ave. Both Maywood and Melrose Park’s trucks were working.

Gordon J. Nord., Jr was at the scene and submitted several dramatic images of illustrating the heavy fire and the trucks working.
