2-Alarm fire in Des Plaines, 1-5-23

This from Larry Shapiro:

After being dispatched to a working fire at an unknown address because of the volume of 911 calls into RED Center, firefighters from the North Maine FPD followed a header and travelled less than 1/2 mile to 9320 Noel Street in unincorporated Maine Township. They pulled up to heavy fire blowing out what was left of one unit of a four-unit, two-story apartment building. The entire front of the second unit from the street had been blown out. The alarm was upgraded to a Working Fire and then a MABAS Box Alarm, followed within minutes by an upgrade to the 2nd Alarm bringing units from as far away as Glencoe and Lincolnshire.

Multiple hand lines and three elevated master streams were used to battle the fire, the majority of which had been knocked down prior to my arrival.

Box Alarm fire near Des Plaines, 12-2-22

The North Maine FPD along with firefighters from Des Plaines and Niles were sent to a somewhat remote location in unincorporated Des Plaines for a house fire Friday morning (12-2-22). The large house at 9609 Reding Circle sits on a small lake off of Golf Road and I-294. Reding Circle is a narrow, private road with minimal access.

As smoke was reported on arrival, the alarm was upgraded to a working fire, and it wasn’t long before flames were venting through the roof of the vacant house. Companies made an interior attack and were pulled out to transition into a defensive attack with aerial operations. Three trucks were put to work with master streams; Des Plaines Tower 61, Niles Tower 2, and Glenview Truck 14. North Maine Engine 1, Niles Engine 3, and Prospect Heights Squad 9 were pumping. Truck 2 was on their own hydrant.

The alarm was upgraded again to a MABAS Box Alarm, although most of those mutual aid companies were not put to work.

Generator fire at the Rivers Casino

Larry Shapiro photo

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

No injuries were reported from a fire that began shortly after 10 p.m. in the cooking ventilation system and rooftop exhaust fans of Hugo’s Frog Bar in the Rivers Casino. The fire appears to have been sparked when grease that had accumulated in the hood and duct system ignited. The Des Plaines Fire Department reported the fire under control and extinguished just after 11 p.m. Fire damage was isolated to the kitchen hood and duct and a portion of the roof, and there was slight water damage elsewhere.

One of the evacuated patrons requested medical assistance and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital with a nonlife-threatening issue.

While the casino reopened early Monday, Hugo’s remained closed.

Under the state’s COVID-19 rules, casinos can maintain normal operating hours, which for Rivers Casino means they are open 24 hours a day, but are only allowed 50% of total capacity.

House fire in Niles, 7-18-19

Excerpts from the Journal-Topics.com:

Niles firefighters suspect a lightning strike as the cause of a fire in a home in the 8300 block of Ballard Road Thursday morning (July 18). Residents in the home heard a loud bang, followed by lights flickering. The lightning strike ignited the fire in a small void space between the home’s vaulted ceilings and the roof itself. Firefighters used pike poles to pull down sections of ceiling to expose and extinguish the flames.

All residents evacuated safely, there were no injuries, and the fire was extinguished within about 20 minutes.
