From Cicero Firefighters Union Local 717 @Local717 on Facebook:
Get well wishes going out to Cicero Firefighter Ted Polashek who was injured fighting a fire in Cicero Saturday:
He was hospitalized suffering from what is being described as a serious case of smoke inhalation while fighting a fire at a two-story home at 2112 61st Court that was called in at 3:45 PM and caused serious damage to the property. It was quickly extinguished and no members of the family living in the home were injured.
But Cicero officials said that Firefighter Ted Polashek, 44, was seriously injured when he inhaled heated smoke. He was taken to MacNeal Hospital and later transferred to Lutheran General Hospital Saturday night where he was being intubated.
Polashek, a 20-plus year veteran firefighter, was working on ventilating the roof during the home fire when he was overcome by the smoke and super-heated gases.

Suburban Cicero has seen one of the highest COVID-19 infection rates in Cook County, reporting 844 confirmed cases Monday with 18 deaths.
“I think it’s due to the demographics of the town, so many people in such a close proximity, so many people living in a three-flat and things like that,” said Cicero Fire Chief Dominick Buscemi, who is part of the town’s emergency committee handling the pandemic response.
A huge chunk of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Cicero have occurred at one nursing home, City View Multicare Center on Cermak Road. The facility has seen over 200 confirmed cases, with eight deaths. Its handling of the coronavirus has drawn the ire of local officials, and the facility is now under investigation by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
“We’re trying to get a handle on it, we’re trying to figure out what’s happening [there],” Buscemi said. “At the onset of the pandemic, I don’t think they were taking the precautions they needed to take. I don’t think that the PPE (personal protective equipment) was being work by the staff members. I don’t think residents were being secluded.”
Buscemi says the town has served the nursing home with several citations so far.
Cicero has also issued five executive orders targeting COVID-19 on top of statewide measures. In mid-April, it mandated that masks be worn by everyone going into public buildings, like grocery stores.
Excerpts from Fox32chicago.com:
A 5-year-old boy and his grandfather died early Tuesday after a fire broke out in their home in west suburban Cicero, according to fire officials.
Just after midnight Tuesday, Cicero firefighters responded to calls of a fire at a home in the 4700 block of West 12th Place. Crews found the body of a 5-year-old boy and a man in a second-floor unit. At least four other residents were displaced due to the fire.
“This was a very difficult fire,” said Cicero Fire Chief Dominic Buscemi. “Our firefighters fought through the flames to get to the upstairs bedroom where we believed a man and a child and possibly others were located but we couldn’t save them. The child had a faint pulse but died at the scene. The grandfather was deceased in the burning structure and we were able to recover his body.”
One firefighter was taken to MacNeal Hospital with minor injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation but strong wind conditions are believed to have played a role in increasing the strength and size of the flames.
This from Chi-Town Fire Photos:
Saturday night Cicero had a fire in a 3-flat apartment building at 2120 s 59th Ave. Crews did a great job and knocked it pretty quick. In total I believe they had 4 lines lead out and the main from Truck 1 was up to the roof.
Excerpts from nbcchicago.com:
Four people were rescued after being trapped in a fire in Cicero that displaced more than a dozen people late Tuesday. The blaze began around 10 p.m. in an apartment building near 16th Street and 51st Court. It started on the third floor with firefighters arriving to find panicked residents who alerted them that people were trapped upstairs.
Firefighters rescued two women and two young children from the building. They suffered from smoke inhalation but were otherwise uninjured and taken to area hospitals as a precaution. One resident said he heard an explosion before the fire began.
The cause of the fire was not immediately clear as authorities continue to investigate.
