The Cicero Fire Department has been awarded a nearly $1.48 million grant through the Department of Homeland Security to help with hiring expenses.
The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant program provides needed federal funds to fire departments and emergency medical service organizations in order to improve the response capabilities of fire departments and the safety of communities.

Two people were injured in a fire Sunday morning at a three-story apartment complex in Cicero. The fire started about 6:30 a.m. in a second floor unit at the Eureka Apartments, 1639 S. 50th Court. The blaze quickly spread to the back of the building, where it ignited and consumed the back wooden porch before moving to the third floor.
Firefighters rescued 60 people and six cats from the burning building. Officials were working to find families temporary shelter until they’re able to find long-term housing as the building was deemed uninhabitable.

Excerpts from the ChicagoSunTimes.com:
Two people were seriously injured early Tuesday, when two homes caught fire around 2:30 a.m. in the 5100 block of West 29th Street. The flames from one house spread to a neighboring home due to windy conditions.
Police officers were first to arrive on the scene. They broke down the front door of the home where the fire started, found an 11-year-old boy by the front door, and pulled him out of the building, according to Cicero Fire Chief Dominick Buscemi.
“It was great work on PD’s part. They were first on the scene,” he said.
Paramedics took the boy and his mother to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood to be treated for smoke inhalation. Both were in serious condition.
The American Red Cross responded to the scene to help between 15 and 20 people forced out of their homes due to the fire.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Roosevelt and Austin in Cicero. This fire bordered on Chicago who did send a full still response, but Cicero FD was already on the scene. Engine 96 was used to supply a ladder pipe on Truck 29. It was a vVacant building and most of the fire was knocked down by my arrival, but I captured a few interesting images including a Cicero engine pumping from a Chicago hydrantSteve

Here are some photos from the Box Alarm in Cicero at 5939 W. Roosevelt Rd. (10/5/17). Calls initially came at Approx. 2300 Hours, and Chicago responded first. After they arrived on scene, they realized it was Cicero’s fire, but they were able to stay on scene and assist since it was a large commercial structure (even though they are not due on the Box Alarm for Cicero). Units from Cicero, Berwyn, Chicago, North Riverside, Oak Park, Forest Park, Stickney, Lyons, and Bedford Park were on scene. Thanks. -Jeff Braun Jr. (COUNTY-WIDE FIRE PHOTOGRAPHY)
