Multiple fatal fire in Chicago, 3-7-23 (more)

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

A house fire has claimed the lives of all four family members of Chicago Firefighter Walter Stewart. The fire broke out just after 9 p.m. in the 2500-block of North Rutherford Avenue on Tuesday night. Everyone inside the home suffered severe smoke inhalation.

The blaze claimed the lives of Stewart’s wife, 36-year-old Summer Day-Stewart, who died on Friday, as well as the couple’s 7-year-old son, Ezra Stewart, who died on Wednesday. The two remaining children, a 2-year-old boy and 9-year-old girl — who have been hospitalized since the fire — passed away Friday night.

Ignite the Spirit, a Chicago Fire Department charity, has established a fund to support the family.

Chicago Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

A Chicago firefighter’s wife has died from her injuries days after her son was killed in a Northwest Side fire.

She has been identified as 36-year-old Summer Day-Stewart. Her 7-year-old son, Ezra Stewart, also died after the Montclare house fire on Tuesday night. Ezra died at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

Two other children were critically injured in the fire, which broke out just after 9 p.m. in the 2500-block of North Rutherford Avenue. Everyone inside the home suffered severe smoke inhalation.

A deceased pet was also seen being removed from the home Wednesday morning.

Chicago fire officials passed out smoke alarms and fire prevention materials near where the fire occurred, as they always do after a deadly blaze. It’s a reminder to check devices and change batteries in the detectors, especially as we approach the time change weekend.

The home involved in the fire did have detectors.

Ignite the Spirit, a Chicago Fire Department charity, has established a fund to support the family.

Fire inspectors are working on determining the cause of the fire. Investigators wouldn’t say whether or not the fire was intentional as the cause remains under investigation.

thanks Keith

Working fire in Chicago, 3-6-23

This from Chi-Town Fire Photos:

Yesterday on my way back from Indy, CFD Engine 82 reported a working fire over the radio at 821 E 90th Place, which is 1/2 block from their firehouse. I had just passed 95th street on the Ryan, so I made it in good time. They had heavy fire showing from the basement of a two-story split level house. E82 & E122 both lead out lines while Truck 42 cut numerous holes in the roof. I got some great shots of the fire, and the full gallery is on our site

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

Chicago firefighters responded a little after 7 p.m. Wednesday night to a two-flat in the 1700-block of Superior Street, and said they had to twice upgrade their response. Parts of the building, including a portion of the roof  collapsed.

As of 9:30 p.m. firefighters continued to pour water on the home from above, but the partial collapse was keeping some of the hot spots shielded from their streams.

A woman in her early 80s was taken from a bottom floor residence to Ascension St. Mary Hospital in serious but stable condition. No one else at the scene needed treatment or evacuation.

From Steve Redick:

McCormick Place, the 1960 exposition hall was destroyed in a spectacular fire on January 16, 1967, despite being thought fireproof by virtue of its steel and concrete construction.
