Western Springs Fire Department news

Excerpts from patch.com:

Western Springs Fire Chief Mike Kelly is retiring later this month. His last day with the fire department is Sept. 20 after 38 years as a firefighter.

The department is set to recognize Kelly’s service during a “walk-out” ceremony at 10 a.m. Sept. 28 at the fire station at 4353 Wolf Road.

In January 2020, Kelly took the helm when then-Chief Patrick Kenny retired after 20 years as a fire chief, the last nine in Western Springs.

He was previously the fire chief in Hinsdale, where he served for 24 years. He later became Bartlett’s assistant fire chief.

Braidwood Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from countryherald.com:

The Braidwood Fire Protection District has been awarded a $1.08 million SAFER grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This grant will fund three additional full-time firefighter/paramedic positions for the next three years.

According to the Braidwood Fire Protection District, the Staffing for Adequate Fire Emergency Response (SAFER) grant will cover the salary and benefits of these positions. The district aims to increase full-time staffing and improve fire protection and safety for residents.

The grant builds on a previous award that funded three firefighter/paramedic positions a year ago. By the end of the grant period, the district will support six full-time positions. After three years, Braidwood will be responsible for sustaining these roles.

The grant aims to ensure that fire departments maintain adequate staffing to meet national safety standards.
