This from the Chicago Tribune:

Four Chicago firefighters were injured after a stairway collapsed while they were fighting a fire in a 3-story apartment building on the South Side in which officials had to call for an emergency response, officials said.

The fire was on the 9000 block of South Muskegan Avenue and reported at 8:43 a.m., according to Chicago fire department officials. About 200 firefighters responded, said Deputy Dist. Chief Lynda Turner.

The four firefighters sustained injures when they were on a stairwell connecting the second and third floors, said Turner.

None of the firefighters sustained broken bones, said Fire Department Comdr. Sean Flynn. At least two of the firefighters sustained minor smoke inhalation, said Flynn.

The “Mayday” response was called at about 9 a.m., said Turner.

Two of the firefighters sustained smoke inhalation and two firefighters minor injuries, according to Fire Department and police officials. All were in good condition and taken to Trinity Hospital, according to a fire department spokesman.

Fox Lake 2nd Alarm house fire 4-8-13

This from Jeff Rudolph:

… some shots from Fox Lake … 04/08/13 Fox Lake responded to a fire in the 38000 blk. of Hillandale in un-incorporated Spring Grove . Engine 223 arrived and found an elevated 1-story house well involved. Command called for an Antioch engine and a Spring Grove tender before pulling box 22-14 to the 2nd alarm for tenders and chiefs, as well as a special for squads from McHenry and Newport. Steep terain and limited access proved difficult for both firefighters and apparatus, as tenders had to back down several blocks of narrow winding gravel roads. Initial thoughts that the resident was still inside the burning house proved wrong, as he arrived from a trip to the store to find firefighters attempting to save his home. Crews worked into the night to extinguish and overhaul the remains. No injuries reported.

Long Grove house fire 4-5-13

Long Grove FPD companies responded to a reported house fire just after 9PM at 4251 Route 83. Units arrived and reported a working fire. Mutual aid companies on the initial response included engines from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, Lake Zurich, and Arlington Heights. Buffalo Grove responded with a 75′ quint, Prospect Heights sent an ambulance and a tanker, and an additional tanker came from the Palatine Rural FPD since the area is without hydrants.

Conditions inside the house, one of the few houses on Route 83 between Aptakisic and Hill Top Roads, were that of hoarders, making interior navigation difficult. The fire was largely on the exterior of the building with extension on both floors. There were no injuries. Additional companies requested to the scene as the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 (working fire) included an engine from Barrington and an Arlington Heights ambulance.

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD Box Alarm 4-3-13

Shortly after 8PM Wednesday evening, a caller reported a basement fire at 884 Swan Boulevard in unincorporated Lake County. The area off of Inverrary Road west of Milwaukee Avenue is covered by the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD, and there is only one point of access into and out of the subdivision.

First arriving units were greeted by the homeowner outside the unit with severed burns to both feet. They reported heavy smoke pushing out of the center unit and upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 (working fire) and then immediately to a Box Alarm. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods had two engines, a quint, three ambulances and two chief officers on the scene. Mutual aid with engines came from Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Northbrook. Squads came from Prospect Heights (RIT) and then from Loncolnshire-Riverwoods Station 51. Deerfield was at the scene with a truck, and additional ambulances came from Lake Zurich and Wheeling. Chief officers came from Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Deerfield, and Mundelein.

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods paramedics transferred patient care of the homeowner to the Wheeling ambulance, which transported to Condell Hospital. Two lines went into the fire unit and an additional line was pulled to an exposure unit, while Buffalo Grove firefighters went to the roof to ventilate. The fire was stopped quickly and contained to the unit of origin, but not before burning through the first floor ceiling to create a hole on the second floor. A dog perished in the fire.

The Mess Canteen was at the scene and setup near Lincolnshire-Riverwoods’ new dive/rehab unit.

Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were both at the scene. Images and a video from Larry are in this post and images from Tim are forthcoming.

Multi-vehicle, multi-victim MVA in Wheeling 3-28-13

Many callers reported a multi-vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer in the westbound express lands of Palatine Road around 5:50PM on Thursday. Prospect Heights and Wheeling Fire Departments were dispatched to the area and located six cars and the semi strewn about the express lanes just east of Wheeling Road. Prospect Heights Engine 39 was the closest engine but could not enter the highway as there was solid traffic with no shoulder. All companies had to use the one-way frontage road or come the wrong way down the expressway.

Two patients had to be extricated from their vehicles. A total of five ambulances were sent to the scene to evaluate the drivers, but only three ambulances transported patients to area hospitals. Many of the drivers and occupants refused treatment on the scene. Along with the five ambulances, two battalion chiefs, one truck, one squad, and three engines were dispatched. Multiple hydraulic tools were put to work.

The westbound lanes remained closed well into the night as the accident investigation team worked the scene.

Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were both at the scene and have images which will be posted in separate articles.
