Chicago FD LODD Firefighter/EMT Andrew Price (more)

Excerpts from nbcchicago.com:

Fallen Chicago Firefighter Andrew “Drew” Price, 39, who died while battling a fire at a Lincoln Park building Nov. 13, was laid to rest on Monday. He was a 14-year veteran of the department and the widely respected driver of Truck 44.

Navy Pier’s Aon Grand Ballroom was packed full of mourners who shared their sorrows and support for the family, friends and fellow firefighters. A husband, brother, son and uncle, Price was known for his infectious personality, always exuding positivity.

Flags will be flown at half-staff through sundown on Nov. 20 to honor Price, whose death marks the fourth line-of-duty death the Chicago Fire Department has seen this year. In August, Lt. Kevin Ward, 59, died after battling a blaze in Norwood Park. In April, two firefighters — Jermaine Pelt, 49, and Jan Tchoryk, 55, were killed battling two different blazes in the city.

Boone County Fire Protection District #2 news

From Boone County Fire Protection District #2:

When Boone Dist #2 responded to a possible vehicle fire, crews found out the vehicle had just overheated. The driver mentioned she was a door dash driver and had a bunch of groceries she was delivering when the car overheated. The delivery was nearby so our personnel loaded up the groceries and graciously delivered them. Instructions on the door said to leave them at the door. Your wish was our command. Delivered your groceries safe and sound.

East Peoria Fire Department news

Excerpts from 25newsnow.com:

A nationwide shortage of firefighters and EMTs has fire departments feeling the pinch to recruit more of each.

Fire Chief Bobby Zimmerman said East Peoria no longer requires firefighters to be EMT Basic licensed, for the first time in 20 years.

“We’re kind of following along with the other trades. Whether you’re a police officer, a mason, an electrician. We want to hire you and then we’ll pay and train you to serve our citizens,” said Chief Zimmerman.

Other fire departments have relaxed their requirements for applicants too, such as Bloomington and Normal.

Typically, the EMT Basic class takes six months to complete. Now, recruits will be sent to the academy in Peoria for a condensed, five-week class. They will get experience and a paycheck in the meantime.

Long-time firefighter and VP of Illinois Firefighters Association Kevin Schott told us the time commitment is higher and the job is more demanding for newer firefighters. “We have to look at making it more palatable for our younger generation who are much more busy than we were when I first started in the fire department – so we can entice them to continue helping us out,” said Schott.

Chief Zimmerman hopes this fulfills their goal of hiring 8 to 10 staff members within the next six months. The City of East Peoria currently has 48 paid staff across their three, soon-to-be four fire substations.

“It’s very difficult for them to get that certificate. This now will allow us to hire them without that certificate, and now come on board,” said Zimmerman.

thanks Rob

3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 11-16-23

Excerpts from cbsnewschicago.com:

Firefighters spent nearly three hours battling a 3-11 alarm fire Thursday morning at a warehouse in the Back of the Yards neighborhood at the Evans Food Group processing plant near 41st and Halsted.

Flames spread from the warehouse where it started to at least two connected buildings, and the roofs of all three buildings collapsed during the fire.

A worker at the plant said it is essentially a large kitchen that packs and ships food all over the country. McDonough said the warehouse stores pork products and grease that both helped fuel the blaze.

It was unclear how many employees were inside when the fire started but everyone got out safely prior to firefighters arriving.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Arlington Heights Fire Department news

From Village of Arlington Heights

#chicagoareafire.com; #ArlingtonHeightsFD; #BillDressel; #TJLiebetrau; The Arlington Heights Fire Department recently presented its first-ever Bill Dressel Workhorse Award to Firefighter TJ Liebetrau, who ran the most calls in 2022. This new award was named after Bill Dressell, who served as an Arlington Heights Firefighter for 41 years before retiring in 2010. He attended the first paramedic class at Northwest Community Hospital in 1972, and this annual award will recognize his many years of service to our community. Recently, Bill stopped by the fire station to present the first Bill Dressell Workhorse Award to Firefighter Liebetrau, who responded to 783 calls in 2022. We look forward to continuing this new tradition in the Arlington Heights Fire Department and carrying on Bill’s legacy for generations to come. Congratulations to Firefighter Liebetrau for this impressive accomplishment!
