Limestone Fire Department news

Excerpts from centralillinoisproud.com:

A Norwood man is in jail Monday after being arrested in connection with two residential fires that occurred within the past week.

Troy Smith, 34, was booked into the Peoria County Jail on two counts of aggravated arson, according to online court records. He could appear in Peoria County Circuit Court later Monday for formal charging.

According to the Peoria County Sheriff, the charges relate to incidents on Aug. 17 and Aug. 20. Both occurred in the 6800 block of West Lamoine Avenue. The first fire involved a Molotov Cocktail thrown at the house at about 12:30 a.m. It was put out almost immediately and no injuries were reported.

The second fire occurred at about 11:15 p.m. Sunday. Like with the first time, the Limestone Fire Department was called out to the same block on Lamoine on a report of a house on fire. The homeowner had already put out the fire with a garden house by the time firefighters arrived. Deputies with the sheriff’s office could smell gasoline in the area. No injuries were reported.

“During the investigation deputies were informed that Troy Smith, 34 years old, who lives in the same area as the residences that caught fire, was a suspect. Deputies found that Smith fled into the woods after the fire but deputies located him at his residence approximately an hour later,” the Peoria County Sheriff said, added that Smith admitted to starting the fires.

Hazmat Box in Warrenville, 8-17-23 (more)

Excerpts from fox32chicago.com:

A dangerous chemical spill in the western suburbs prompted a HAZMAT response Thursday evening, when a toxic and deadly gas was accidentally concocted during routine pool maintenance.

Just before 5:30 p.m., the Warrenville Fire Department responded to The Westlyn apartment complex in the 28000 block of Diehl Road and the call was soon upgraded to a box alarm, prompting a response from HAZMAT technicians in surrounding communities.

Fire officials confirmed that chlorine and muriatic acid were spilled by accident. The dangerous combination creates chlorine gas.

Hazmat technicians made entry into the building to contain, neutralize, and remove the product from the building where they discovered a hazardous vapor cloud.

A spokesperson with the complex said that a maintenance team was restocking pool supplies when there was a mixture of chemicals that caused a reaction in a mechanical room.

It led to a massive emergency response and an hours-long evacuation.

Firefighters used a large portion of the parking lot during their response, as their setup outside was just as important as it was to get inside to contain the spill.

On their way out, the HAZMAT team followed a rigorous decontamination process.

Firefighters ventilated the building, and just after 7 p.m. residents were able to return to their apartments.

Four people were treated and released by paramedics for non-life threatening injuries.

Several surrounding fire departments responded to assist Warrenville firefighters, including Wheaton, Lisle-Woodridge, Downers Grove, Boilingbrook and Naperville.

Springfield Fire Department news

Excerpts from nprilliois.org:

The Springfield Fire Department has been awarded a nearly half a million dollar grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The department will use the $460,290 grant to buy 42 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) compliant air packs with, as well as a new self-contained breathing apparatus fill station to replace an existing one.

The department said the equipment will help firefighters do their jobs, including hazardous materials incidents and providing critical support during natural disasters.

Boone County Fire District 2 news

Excerpts from wrex.com:

Big changes are happening in Boone County when it comes to ambulance service. Voters in district 2 approved a new tax to bring ambulance service in-house and now it’s up and running.

For more than 35 years Boone County Fire District 2 relied on outside agencies to provide EMS transport but as of last week, the district now has its own service.

Right now the district has one ambulance with a total of six firefighter paramedics and EMTs.

The district is working to hire and train as many paramedics and EMTs as possible.

A second ambulance is expected to start service in April 2024.
