Commercial fire in Shorewood, 7-28-23

This from Jim Skrabel:

My son Chris and I arrived at the fire just before the first engine got water on the fire. The 2 1/2 inch hand line made a quick knock of the main fire. Job well done!

The Troy fire was a box alarm at 18600 S. RT 59.

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

On Thursday, the Quinn Fire Academy was flooded with dozens of young girls for the annual firefighter for a day, and the event is making an impact throughout the city.

Chicago has only had one female fire commissioner in its history, but, in a couple years, there could be more, due to the over 70 girls who stopped by the academy.

“My parents said, ‘no that job is not for you,’ and I said, ‘watch,'” Deborah Sommer said. Thirty four years later, she’s district chief of diversity and inclusion. Sommer said she didn’t have programs like this growing up.

Data show only 9% of Chicago firefighters are women, and less than 2% are Black women.

The very first female firefighter in Chicago wasn’t hired until 1974.

The district chief said the department has come a long way, but still has a lot farther to go.

Of interest … Boston Fire Department

Excerpts from nbcboston.com:

The Boston Firefighters Burn Foundation brought a little extra cheer to Shriners Hospital for Children Tuesday for their annual Christmas in July visit.

Santa and Mrs. Claus joined firefighters as they raised the ladder to wave to child patients and greeted staff, including doctors and nurses. Firefighting elves moved about giving out presents, and the whole crowd enjoyed cake and ice cream.

“We receive much more than we give,” said Burn Foundation Director Steve Turley. “We take away true reminders of what really matters.”

The Boston Firefighters Burn Foundation is a volunteer organization with a mission to “ease the suffering and hardships of burn victims, survivors and their families.”
