Peoria Fire Department news

Excerpts from centralillinoisproud.com:

Peoria’s second annual Fill the Fire Truck drive will be supplying students with more than 800 backpacks filled with school supplies this year.

The initiative is a partnership between the Peoria Fire Department and the Afro-American Firefighters of Peoria. Last year they hoped to fill 50 backpacks and ended up exceeding their expectations by giving out more than 300.

This year, they more than doubled that amount of supplies, which would fill between three and four fire trucks.

Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger said he hopes to see the drive grow even larger in years to come.

The backpacks will be distributed out at Trewyn Park Thursday during the Peoria Park District’s “The Streets Belong to Me” event. The fire trucks will be there at 6 p.m.

Request for information …

I am curious about a type of unit operated by the Chicago Fire Dept.  They are designated as rescue companies and consist of two trucks.  One of the trucks carries a 55′ aerial platform.  Why are there two trucks?  Why does a rescue carry an aerial platform?  What type of equipment does each truck carry?  Does the CFD also operate “normal” type rescues?

Gary/Chicago International Airport news

Excerpts from NWIndianaBusiness.com:

The Gary/Chicago International Airport introduced a new rescue and firefighting truck as the result of $2 million in federal funding.

Fiscal Year 2022 Community Project Funding for the purchase was secured by Congressman Frank Mrvan (D-1st).

The 3,000-gallon fire truck will allow different types of planes to land and will allow for growth at the airport.

The funds also made possible the purchase of two high-speed runway brooms for snow removal. The truck cost $1.3 million and the booms were $932,000. The balance of the acquisitions came from 5% contributions from the Indiana Department of Transportation and the airport.

Most of the airport’s equipment is 20 years and older. The new equipment is expected to improve safety and decrease maintenance expenses.

Hampshire Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

Hampshire fire officials said they were called to a home in the 800 block of Elm Street Monday just after 4 p.m. for a grill on fire. As firefighters responded, they could see a large header from several blocks away. When they arrived they found a large fire in the back of the 2-story home on both floors and in the attic.

Firefighters were told that someone was trapped in the home. They began searching under heavy smoke, and determined the two residents had already managed to escape before going separate ways, unable to find each other.

One resident was taken to Elgin Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. The second resident refused treatment at the scene, and a Hampshire police officer was also transported for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control around 4:45 p.m. A propane grill on the back deck caught fire, which then spread rapidly up the side of the house and into the attic. The home was badly damaged by the fire.
