Park Ridge house fire 2-15-14

This from Larry Shapiro:

Calls reporting a house fire at 102 S. Chester came in to the Park Ridge Fire Department shortly before 10AM on Saturday (2-15-14). After spotting a header while in route, units arrived at the house on the corner of Chester and Garden to find the back porch on fire and a worker with burn injuries. The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire. Engine 35 encountered a frozen hydrant at the corner, so firefighters hand jacked hose from the Tower 36 to another hydrant half a block south of the incident.

Companies made quick work of knocking down the main fire, and found that there was minimal communication to the second floor. The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire, apparently in the final stages of remodeling.

Units at the scene were Park Ridge Engine 35, Tower 36, both Park Ridge ambulances and Battalion 35. Rosemont and Niles responded with trucks, Morton Grove with a squad, Norwood Park and North Maine with engines, plus ambulances from Lincolnwood and Elk Grove Village.

I arrived well after the fire was out and have images of the scene.

Chicago 2-11 Alarm commercial fire, 1-17-14

Chicago had a 2-11 Alarm fire overnight at 75th & King Drive.

From the Chicago Tribune:

The fire in the Dollar & Up store, at the southwest corner of East 75th Street and South Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, was reported at 12:12 a.m., Chicago Fire Department District Chief Tim Sampey said. Firefighters found a “heavy volume of fire” in the store and elevated it to a 2-11 alarm as they worked to keep it from spreading to an adjacent business, Sampey said.

After learning that no one was believed to be inside, firefighters fought in defensive mode, attacking the fire from the outside of the building.

Firefighters kept the flames from spreading to the adjacent Cricket store and extinguished the blaze at 1:30 a.m.

Cicero 2nd Alarm fire 8-16-11

Cicero industrial fire on 54th Avenue 8-16-11 2nd alarm

An impressive header was visible for miles as the Cicero Fire Department and several neighboring departments battled a fire in an industrial building on 54th Avenue. Tuesday evening. Josh Boyajian photo

Thick black smoke and flames burned freely through the roof of the building as Cicero upgraded the alarm for additional help in battling the blaze. Cicero Engine 2 seen through the fence has a positin in the next yard over. Josh Boyaian photo

Cicero companies responded to an industrial fire near Roosevelt and Laramie around 7PM and found a large, well involved building. Chicago companies also responded to a reported fire in the area and returned when it was confirmed that the fire was in Cicero. A header from the fire could be seen as far north as Morton Grove.

Josh Boyajian went to the fire and submitted several images and a description:

Cicero was toned out at around 7pm for a possible factory fire. While enroute there was a huge header visible for miles. Enigne 1 was was first on scene and requested a BOX. About 10 minutes later it was upgraded to a 2-11.  Cicero Eng 1 was the first engine and Cicero Trk 2 was the first truck.
Stickney Engine 1201 was the box engine and was suppling Engine 1. Stickney dropped their bed of 1,000 feet of 4″ to a Chicago hydrant on Roosevelt

Wilmette historic gallery is added

Wilmette Fire Department history

Apparatus photos dating back to 1958 representing the Wilmette Fire Department have been assembled into a gallery which is accessible through the ‘Historic Photos’ button on the pages depicting the Wilmette stations. Images to date are from Bill Friedrich, Karl Klotz, and Larry Shapiro plus several from the collection of Jeff Schielke.

Wilmette Fire Department E-ONE Cyclone engine

In years past the fleet consisted of Seagrave apparatus and then beginning in the 1980s the department started to move the fleet to include units built by E-ONE. Today, as in years past, Wilmette staffs two stations, though the manner in which they run apparatus has changed. The west station, Station 2 runs an engine plus an ambulance and is home to the spare engine. The headquarters station has a battalion chief, an ambulance, and a tower ladder. On any given day if they are at full manning, the squad will be put into service to chase the ambulance. In reserve at this station is another tower ladder which insures that they will always have a tower in service regardless of maintenance or other issues that require taking the frontline piece out of service.

Throughout the 70s and into the mid-80s Wilmette had two trucks on the roster like they do today. They ran a 1962 Seagrave mid-mount ladder truck and a 1975 Seagrave 55′ Snorkel.

Sadly, we don’t as of yet have images of the Cadillac ambulances.
