3rd Alarm house fire in Riverwoods 5-1-12

A family residing at 1080 Hiawatha Lane in Riverwoods, IL was awakened around 3AM by smoke detectors. Before exiting the house, homeowners encountered heavy smoke from the basement and were unable to descend the stairs to help a child escape from his bedroom. The child, unable to navigate the dense smoke to get up the stairs, was able to escape through a window and window well.

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods companies responded on the Still Alarm, and upon arrival they upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 (working fire). This brought Prospect Heights Squad 9 and a mutual-aid ambulance.

First arriving firefighters found the front door open and building smoke conditions inside as they made their way to the basement stairway. Almost immediately they noticed a softness under foot and quickly fled the house. Within minutes of all members getting out, the front foyer began to collapse.

As it appeared that the fire was spreading vertically throughout the house, companies vented the roof and second floor windows. The basement fire continued to burn freely and a request was made for high expansion foam. Round Lake Foam Unit 2229 responded to the scene. The fire continued to burn and the alarm was upgraded again to a 3rd Alarm. This brought engines from Lake Bluff, Glenview, plus a truck from Wilmette, an ambulance from Palatine, and a squad from Highland Park.

Northfield house fire 8-28-11

updated 10AM

Late Sunday night, residents called the fire department in Northfield reporting smoke in the area of the 300 block of Eaton Street. When the fire department arrived in the area, they had smoke from an undetermined source throughout the block. Wilmette dive box 8-27-11

updated 9:30PM

The Wilmette Fire Department received a call before 6PM this evening about a swimmer in Lake Michigan who was caught in the heavy currents and disappeared new Gillson Park. When the fire department arrived, they requested divers from throughout Division 3 plus the Coast Guard and a helicopter from the Chicago FIre Department. The helicopter was initially unavailable as Chicago had a rescue of their own in progress. The helicopter was able to make one pass over the area before returning to Midway Airport to refuel.

The water was deemed to choppy for divers, so firefighters walked the breakwater and into the surf looking for signs of the swimmer. Evanston responded with their jet skis which enabled divers to venture into the lake. The swimmer’s body was spotted by firefighters walking the beach after more than an hour on-scene, and the jet skis were used to bring the swimmer’s body to shore.

Tim Olk and Jeff Rudolph were on the scene and photographed the operation.

Jeff Rudolph provided the following description:

At the Wilmette Code 4 and dive box at Gillson Park today, a 15 year old male was pulled under by a strong current. Conditions where too severe to put divers under the water, so instead they did walking patterns using pike poles to locate the victim. After 1.5 hrs, the victim was spotted in the surf break by a spotter on shore. The victim was pulled out unresponsive. ALS care was started on the beach and the patient was transported up to Wilmette Ambulance 27. Medics from Wilmette, Deerfield, and Skokie worked on the victim and transported him to Evanston Hospital where he was pronounced. The waverunners used belong to the Evanston FD. Chicago FD Air 1 assisted with an overhead look, but the churned up water was to murkey to see anything.

A 14-year-old boy died after being pulled from Lake Michigan this evening off of Gillson Park in Wilmette.

The search began sometime after 6 p.m. in the water off the beach near Sheridan Road and MichiganAvenue in the North Shore suburb, and the search ended about 7 p.m. when a male of unknown age was pulled from the water.

A witness saw officials pull the person from the water and put him onto a stretcher while performing CPR. The person was then placed into a Wilmette fire ambulance and taken from the scene.

Wilmette historic gallery is added

Wilmette Fire Department history

Apparatus photos dating back to 1958 representing the Wilmette Fire Department have been assembled into a gallery which is accessible through the ‘Historic Photos’ button on the pages depicting the Wilmette stations. Images to date are from Bill Friedrich, Karl Klotz, and Larry Shapiro plus several from the collection of Jeff Schielke.

Wilmette Fire Department E-ONE Cyclone engine

In years past the fleet consisted of Seagrave apparatus and then beginning in the 1980s the department started to move the fleet to include units built by E-ONE. Today, as in years past, Wilmette staffs two stations, though the manner in which they run apparatus has changed. The west station, Station 2 runs an engine plus an ambulance and is home to the spare engine. The headquarters station has a battalion chief, an ambulance, and a tower ladder. On any given day if they are at full manning, the squad will be put into service to chase the ambulance. In reserve at this station is another tower ladder which insures that they will always have a tower in service regardless of maintenance or other issues that require taking the frontline piece out of service.

Throughout the 70s and into the mid-80s Wilmette had two trucks on the roster like they do today. They ran a 1962 Seagrave mid-mount ladder truck and a 1975 Seagrave 55′ Snorkel.

Glenview Fire at Park District Facility

Flames were reported to be 40 feet in the air by police units when they arrived at the Glenview Park District Facility at 1100 Roosevelt Avenue just after midnight this morning. When Glenview Fire Department companies arrived  they initiated a defensive attack prior to requesting a MABAS Box Alarm for additional units. The building incorporated offices on one end and equipment storage throughout the rest. Several vehicles were destroyed along with the building. Several hand lines operated as well as elevated master streams from Northfield Truck 29 (E-ONE) and Glenview Truck 14 (Pierce).  Three engines from Glenview and one from Wilmette were pumping at this fire.
