Code 4 fire in Wilmette, 5-28-15

This from Larry Shapiro:

Wilmette firefighters were called to 506 5th Street Friday afternoon (5/28/15) by a resident that had smoke in their 2nd floor apartment. Companies arrived and found a small fire in the basement that was traveling up the pipe chase to the fourth floor.

The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire bringing units from Skokie, Winnetka, Glenview, Glencoe, Northbrook, and Evanston as they opened walls on all floors to get at the fire.

Code 4 fire in Glencoe, 4-30-15

Glencoe was called to the construction site at 328 Tudor Court for a fire on the roof. Several pallets of styrofoam were burning which produced an impressive header with a good amount of smoke. Northfield and Winnetka had ladders to the roof with hand lines. Glencoe and Northfield were on hydrants. Wilmette dropped hose and made a hydrant but did not end up supplying water.

Highwood and Highland Park were also at the scene. One construction worker was transported by Glenview Ambulance 6 to Highland Park Hospital.

Wilmette firefighters and village in arbitration

Excerpts from the Chicagotribune.com:

It will probably be Labor Day before Wilmette’s union-represented firefighters and village officials learn how an arbitrator has ruled in a contract dispute between the two parties. Until that time, the 33 unionized department employees comprising the majority of Wilmette’s 44 sworn firefighters will continue working without a new contract, as they have since Dec. 31, 2013.

The main issue holding up negotiations, which began before the last three-year contract expired, is the village’s desire to institute a two-tier wage system for firefighter-paramedics.  Patrick Harrington, a representative of the firefighters, confirmed April 23 that contract talks had gone to an arbitrator for a ruling, and that the two-tier salary proposal was one of the issues. Harrington said both sides had agreed not to comment publicly on the negotiations beyond that.

Non-union village employees hired after Wilmette instituted a new, lower pay scale in January 2011 are paid less than those hired before that time. The move to a dual wage system was part of cost-cutting measures implemented in the 2011 budget. The village’s union-represented police accepted a similar two-tier system in 2013.

Box Alarm in Wilmette, 2-17-15

This is the first of what will be several posts on this fire:

Wilmette companies responded to an automatic fire alarm at the Woman’s Club of Wilmette, 930 Greenleaf Avenue around 10AM this morning (2/17/15). Upon rounding the corner, smoke was visible through the roof and the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 (working fire).

The occupants were out of the building when the fire department arrived and made an initial interior attack before being forced to withdraw. The alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm for additional companies.

Four aerial master streams were operating; Wilmette Tower 26, Northbrook Tower 12, Evanston Truck 23, and Morton Grove Quint 4. Engines pumping included Wilmette Engine 27 and Winnetka Engine 28. Other units at the scene were engines from Lincolnwood, and Glenview, trucks from Northfield and Des Plaines, a Skokie squad, both Wilmette ambulances, the Mess Canteen, MABAS Division 3 Comm 3, and several chief officers.

Here are a few images from Larry Shapiro. Also at the scene were Tim Olk and Jeff Rudolph.

Wilmette to appoint new fire chief

From the Village of Wilmette:

Deputy Chief Mike McGreal has been selected to become the Wilmette Fire Department’s new chief.  McGreal will succeed Chief Jim Dominik, who retires January 2, 2015 after 29 years with the department.

McGreal started his career in Wilmette as a firefighter/paramedic in 1988, was promoted to Lieutenant in 2000, served as Fire Marshall in 2001, and was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2007. McGreal earned the title of Executive Fire Officer in 2013 through the National Fire Academy and Chief Fire Officer in 2014 through the Center for Public Safety Excellence. McGreal holds a Bachelor of Science in Fire Management and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

As Deputy Chief, McGreal has been responsible for managing the daily operations for the fire department’s 50 employees and two fire stations. He has been an integral member of the village’s management team, working closely with Chief Dominik to retain the fire department’s accreditation status and in improving the  ISO insurance rating from a 4 to a 2.

McGreal has served as a site peer assessor for the Center for Fire Accreditation International, as an instructor and Executive Safety Committee member for the Northern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy, Co-chair of the Fire Chief’s Steering Committee for the Intergovernmental Risk Management Agency, and Chief Liaison and Team Leader for the MABAS Division 3 Underwater Rescue Team.
