2nd Alarm house fire in South Barrington 7-9-13 (more)

From the Chicago Tribune:

South Barrington police say a mother and her two young children are safe after lightning struck their home this afternoon, starting a fire.

The incident took place around noon in the 0-100 block of Terra Vita Drive in South Barrington, police said—with the family inside—and initially was reported as an explosion.

He said the now-displaced family safely left the two-story, wood-and-brick house without help. No one was hurt but the house appears to be destroyed and has heavy damage to the attic, second floor and parts of the first floor, Deegan said.

Units were called to the scene and found smoke and fire from the roof. Companies initially made an interior attack but were reportedly forced to retreat due to insufficient water. At one point before all of the initial units arrived on-scene, there was some sort of explosion (possibly a smoke explosion) which blew out the front door. Fortunately, no one was injured as companies were preparing to make entry at that time. The alarm was upgraded to a box alarm and the attack went defensive. The house is located on a dead end street with no hydrants, just off Barrington Road.

The Still Alarm and Box Alarm brought: two engines and a 75′ quint from Barrington, a tower ladder from Palatine, tankers/tenders from Palatine Rural, Nunda Rural, Bartlett, Wauconda, and East Dundee. Additional engines came from Lake Zurich, Long Grove, Hoffman Estates, Fox River Grove, and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills. Ambulances came from Arlington Heights and Buffalo Grove along with a squad from Cary.

Larry Shapiro was at the scene and submitted several images.

Barrington Engine 2, the first engine on  the scene, went into the driveway. Palatine Rural Tanker 36 arrived soon after and backed into the driveway to nurse Engine 2 until the tanker shuttle could be setup. One portable tank was dropped in front of Tanker 36 and two were dropped near Barrington Engine 1 just past the house.

These engines would eventually supply a master stream from the Palatine tower ladder and several hand lines in the rear sector.

The alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm for tenders after it became apparent that more units were needed to maintain a constant water supply. Tankers/tenders came from South Elgin, Crystal Lake, and Fox Lake. With the exception of Palatine Rural Tanker 36 which was stationary, the other tankers each made at least four runs each to refill and dump.

Three portable tanks were dropped and tied together on Barrington Road to provide for a quicker turnaround. Long Grove Engine 55 drafted from these tanks and supplied the palatine Rural tanker through a moderate lay of 5″ LDH.

The new engine will replace the current Pierce Lance used as Engine 22. Alexis, Rosenbauer, and Spartan ERV submitted bids. South Elgin will phase out it's Seagrave H-cab that has been used as a reserve. South Elgin FPD expects to take delivery in a year.

South Elgin fire looking to Elgin for dispatch

The Courier-News has an article describing a proposed change in dispatch services for police and fire in South Elgin.

Village officials say they have little concern if the South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District uses a dispatch center different from the one used by the South Elgin Police Department.

Facing a $1 million-plus upgrade for its existing dispatch center at the Village Hall, the Police Department is in negotiations to move dispatching services to KaneComm-911, Kane County’s dispatch center. KaneComm also has agreed to hire South Elgin’s existing dispatch staff, officials said.

The Fire Protection District, however, is looking to move its dispatch operations to Elgin later this spring. Elgin’s dispatch center is at the Elgin Police Department.

Right now, Jones said, the fire district pays the village for its dispatch services — $76,900 a year. When determining which dispatch center to move to, South Elgin took the elimination of that payment into account, he said.

Elgin’s proposal would cost the fire district $51,000 a year, Cluchey said. “I believe that there would be a savings. However, that savings will be put into some technology, like mobile data terminals. Will that become a wash? We don’t know that yet.”

No contracts have been signed. However, the South Elgin & Countryside board has given the fire district’s management, including Cluchey, the green light to pursue a contract, he said.

Campton Hills asks residents about starting their own fire dept

An article HERE in the Kane County Chronicle outlines a vote on Tuesday’s ballot asking residents of Campton Hills if they wanted to create their own fire department.

CAMPTON HILLS – Residents do not want village leaders to research the possibility of establishing Campton Hills’ own fire and emergency services department.

According to unofficial results, nearly 55 percent of voters said no to an advisory referendum question asking residents whether the village should investigate the establishment of such a department. About 42 percent said yes.

A total of 1,691 residents responded to the question. Village President Patsy Smith said she would have preferred a larger turnout.

But, she said, “Basically the village board got the information we needed.”

The village is served by five fire districts: Elburn, South Elgin, Pingree Grove, Burlington and Fox River and Countryside.

Smith has said the referendum question was influenced by the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District’s recent actions to terminate its service contract with St. Charles and establish fire stations of its own.

Under certain circumstances, Campton Hills could revisit the idea of developing its own fire department, Smith said.

“Something would have to happen to trigger the people to request to investigate this issue,” she said.

Shall the Village  of Campton Hills investigate the establishment of its own fire and emergency services department covering the entire village?

Yes – 735
x-No – 956

South Elgin 2nd Alarm 1-20-11

South Elgin had a house fire on Thursday at 10N917 Gale Street in Elgin Township (Kane County). The fire was apparently blamed on a bird’s nest which ignited and sent fire into the attic of the home. It was a 15-degree day that felt like 5 degrees with the wind.

Scott Peterson submitted several shots from the scene after the fire was brought under control.

From The Courier-News:

According to preliminary reports, firefighters were called to the home just after 9:30 a.m. by the home’s two occupants. Firefighters found fire in a wall and a deep-seated fire in the attic, with flames coming out of windows on both sides of the structure. Reports stated that the home actually had multiple attic units as a result of remodeling projects and the fire had spread among them.

The Courier-News has an article about the fire HERE.

Departments that responded to provide mutual aid included Elgin, Pingree Grove, Elburn, Bartlett, Hanover Park, and West Dundee.
