River Forest looking into fire district

An article at OakPark.com  mentions that:

River Forest officials will be doing some research in the coming fiscal year to investigate the possible creation of a cost-saving, multi-village fire district in the future.

River Forest Village Administrator Eric Palm said cost would be a major component in discussing transition from a local department governed by the village to a “fire district,” which are separate entities that can levy taxes and would be run by a board of elected or appointed trustees, said Craig Haigh, the fire chief in Hanover Park, a village intersected by Cook and DuPage counties.

River Forest Trustee Michael Gibbs, who sits on the village’s fire committee, said he thought the decision to bring up fire districts again next fiscal year was mostly driven by finances and not necessarily service improvements. The same committee discussed the matter in 2009, and the village first explored the idea about 15 years before that.

Gibbs said there was interest this time around, but the concept had to gain some traction.

“Does a little town really need that apparatus to just serve that little town?” he asked. “If those smaller communities can pool their resources, that’s a big plus.”

River Forest Fire Department garage fire 111 Thatcher 3-1912

Dan McInerney submitted the following:

This came in at about 0945 this morning. I followed companies from quarters. A one-story wood-frame garage, 22×20, with a small fire in the ceiling area was knocked down with one 1.75” line, followed by some quick overhaul. Companies on-scene were RFOR E222, T221, ELPK E947, FOPK E402, OKPK T631 and C620, along with various chiefs from River Forest and Elmwood Park. River Forest T221 as you know is Oak Park’s old T631, and the 1981 Seagrave 100′ was modified by River Forest to hold a few hundred feet of 4-inch hose enabling them to forward lay a supply line to E222.
This first set shows the garage before the line was charged and the garage opened

Elmwood Park Box Alarm 1-17-11

The Elmwood Park Fire Department had two Box Alarm fires on January 17th. The first was after midnight, and the second was roughly 8AM when they received a call for a fire in a two-story, single family, frame building of balloon construction in the 2100 block of 73rd Court. Residents reported a fire in the second floor bathroom. First arriving companies encountered heavy smoke and high heat on the second floor and initially had trouble finding the seat of the fire. Heavy fire was visible after companies vented the front of the building and there was a partial roof collapse in the rear. Interior crews were ordered out of the building and the attack became defensive. Elmwood Park was assisted by River Forest, River Grove, and Norwood Park on the still alarm. The box alarm brought Franklin Park, Leyden Township, Melrose Park, and Northlake (RIT) to the scene while Schiller Park changed quarters into Elmwood Park.

Jim Lee (CFD FAO) was there as fire vented through the roof and submitted several images.
