Barrington Box Alarm 11-23-11

The Barrington Fire Department received a call around 8PM this evening reporting a fire at 340 Weatherstone Road. The call came from a neighbor who saw fire outside the garage. First arriving companies were met by heavy fire at the three-car garage and traveling up through the roof encroaching on the main portion of the house. Shortly thereafter a Box Alarm was requested which brought tankers to this non-hydranted subdivision near Lake-Cook and Ela Roads. Fire was in the garage attic and portions of the second floor attic as well before firefighters were able to stop it from spreading further. Both vehicles in the garage were virtually undamaged. The first Barrington engine was in the driveway and was fed by the second engine in front of the house. A porta-tank was dropped by this engine and the tankers kept the water supply consistent.

Larry Shapiro went to the scene and arrived after the fire had been knocked down. He submitted several images from the scene and has a small gallery with additional images HERE.

The homeowner at 21396 Brandon Road in Kildeer called the fire department this evening shortly after 6PM to report a fire in the attached three-car garage. Fire protection is provided by the Lake Zurich Fire Department who responded with three engines and a truck. Long Grove responded auto-aid with a 3,000-gallon tanker since this neighborhood is without hydrants. The header could be seen as units went en-route and the alarm was filled out for the working fire. Upon arrival, companies were met with 20-foot flames from the garage which contained two cars. The alarm was quickly elevated to a MABAS Box Alarm and then a 2nd Alarm was requested within minutes. The bulk of the fire was contained to the garage area with some extension into the house and the attic area.

A skid-load and a 2 1/2 were pulled from Engine 4 which had 1,000 gallons of tank water that was immediately supplemented by 3,000 gallons from Long Grove Tanker 55. As these lines went to work, Lake Zurich Engine 3 laid 900 feet of 5″ down the road where they took an in-line position. Lake Zurich Engine 2 laid out an additional 700 feet of 5″ to the end of the street where they were met by Barrington Tanker 361 who setup their portable tank. The in-line operation was completed before companies ran out of water.

A 3rd Alarm was requested for manpower to assist companies with salvage and overhaul. One firefighter was transported to the hospital after going through rehab.

Larry Shapiro went to the scene and although he spotted the header from Buffalo Grove, the main body of fire was knocked down before he arrived at the scene. He submitted several images from the scene.

Departments assisting at the scene included tankers from Long Grove, Barrington, Nunda, Cary, and Palatine Rural. Engines came from Wheeling, Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, Grayslake, Mundelein, Mt. Prospect, and Lake Forest. Ambulances on the scene were from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Libertyville, Highland Park, and Lake Villa. Squads came from Deerfield, Wauconda, and Gurnee, plus Arlington Heights responded with a tower ladder.

Barrington Fire Department house fire Flynn Creek 5-10-11 2-11

Firefighters encountered heavy fire upon arrival and had to shuttle water to the scene. The fire which reportedly began in the garage spread quickly throughout the home which appeared from the front to be a ranch house when in fact there were two-stories in the rear.Larry Shapiro photo

Shortly before 1AM, Barrington received a call reporting fire in an attached garage at 27818 W. Flynn Creek Drive. This is an area without hydrants and the initial alarm included both tankers from Barrington plus mutual aid from Long Grove with Tanker 55 in addition to all Barrington companies and a Lake Zurich engine. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire in the house that sits on a hill with one-story in front and two-stories in the rear. They immediately upgraded to a Box Alarm which brought help from Carpentersville, Hoffman Estates, East Dundee, Cary, Rolling Meadows, Wauconda, Palatine, and the Palatine Rural Fire Department. Flynn Creek is a narrow, one-lane road which barely accommodated the tankers and a handful of other apparatus. As the fire progressed, a 2nd alarm was struck which brought tankers from South Elgin, Bartlett, and Nunda in addition to another truck and two more engines. Most of the 2nd alarm companies were not put to work.

The tanker shuttle brought roughly 42,000 gallons of water to the fire from 8 tankers. There were no injuries reported.

The Fox Lake Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 36378 N. Wesley Road Monday before 11AM. First arriving units found heavy smoke on arrival from an occupied, one-story frame structure. Round Lake was due to the scene with an engine for mutual aid.

Countryside training with new rigs

The Countryside Fire Department in MABAS Division 4 has been hosting several days of training for their firefighters and neighboring departments as well. Countryside has two of their new units working at the training site. These are the IHC/US Tanker 2,000-gallon tanker (tender) and the IHC/Rosenbauer Timberwolf interface engine. Dan McInerney forwarded several images from Wednesday’s work.

Dan writes the following description about the training:

It’s in a two story house on a five acre plot. The house was built in 1948. It is masonary construction with lathe and plaster over true dimensional lumber. All three Countryside (CTYD) shifts will participate Wed, Thu, and Fri. The CTYD POCs will train Thursday night. Other depts: Lake Zurich, Wauconda, and Lincolnshire – Riverwoods, are sending an engine each day with their on-duty crews. Water is being “tendered” in and drafted out of a portable tank by the wildland engine for the primary attack hoselines, and off the tender as a secondary/backup water source. Evolutions are consisting of hose advancement and fire attack. Due to the construction of the house, the fire evolutions are pretty good and so far the upstairs rooms have withstood a tremendous amount of abuse. They sure don’t build them like this anymore! Also, as an interesting side note, there is a house on an island in the middle of Countryside Lake that we will eventually burn down, but not train in. It is only accessible by boat!
