MABAS Division 11 fire trucks

This from Dan McInerney:

Last week MABAS Division 11 conducted a division wide Blue Card drill at the Cicero FD training tower. Departments from Division 11 performed basic fireground activities with an emphasis on radio protocol. The rain and clouds didn’t make for great pictures but I managed to grab a few.

Cicero – Will be placing an order with Pierce for a PUC pumper with a short wheelbase, i’m still awaiting all the specifications for the chassis.
Lisle Woodridge FPD –  Their new Pierce PUC engine is awaiting delivery. That is a Pierce Arrow XT PUC pumper 1500/750. This rig will become Engine 521 down south, the current 521 will become the new 551 at Station 5. DuComm will be changing their numbers in the near future also.

Cicero Box Alarm 10-30-12

This from Steve Redick:

Approximately 24th & Cicero…an old Railroad maintenance building…an old roundhouse. The aerial view is from the new Apple maps app. When I arrived there was nothing left to see firewise but they had 2 elevated master streams ready to go so I imagine it musta looked pretty good at first. Judging by the radio traffic I think they had an old RR engine on fire. Lyons squad was supplying a foam line to the interior, not sure if it was class a or b. I really like the shots of the hole cut through the fence to access the hydrant..I wonder how they knew it was there….The Berwyn engine was supplying a very long relay of LDH, from all the way across Cicero ave. If anyone has some info to add please feel free….

Cicero ambulance stolen

The Chicago Tribune has an article detailing a man stealing a Cicero Fire Department ambulance from MacNeal Hospital … because he needed a ride home.

A 77-year-old man told police he stole an ambulance from MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn because he had just left the hospital and “needed to get home,” authorities say.

Officers caught up with John Neal just before midnight Tuesday on the South Side of Chicago, about 10 miles from the hospital and two miles from his home in the 6800 block of South Claremont Avenue, according to a police report.

There was damage to the passenger side mirror and the undercarriage of the ambulance, which is owned by the Town of Cicero. Neal has never had a driver’s license, police say.

The ambulance was parked outside the hospital, apparently idling with a door open, while two paramedics were inside MacNeal, said Ray Hanania, a Cicero town spokesman. Neal had been “kicked out” of the hospital where ambulances were parked, and may have been intoxicated and angry, Hanania said.

The entire article is HERE.

thanks Chris

Cicero acquired this 1978 Ford F-700/Howe commercial engine from the Western Electric Plant Brigade when it closed. This had a 750-GPM pump with 600 gallons of water. Bill Friedrich photo

The engine was sold to a department in Alabama. It was at Cicero for about 1-2 years. They did not care for the lime green color. Western Electric employed around 20,000 people and was located near 22nd & Cicero. They did have a full time department.

The Color of Fire Trucks (part 11) Division 11

It’s been a while since our last article in The Color of Fire Trucks series. We are up to MABAS Division 11 this time with only one department to feature which previously ran with apparatus that was not red.

The Cicero Fire Department purchased several units in the 1970s and 1980s that were solid white. They had a Ford/Grove 100′ rear-mount aerial, a Ford/Darly top-mount engine, and a unique squad on a Ford F chassis with a light-weight ladder similar to those used by outdoor sign companies.

Shortly after being delivered to Cicero by the W.S. Darley Company in 1981, Engine 3 was photographed outside the station. Built on a Ford C-8000 chassis with a rear custom canopy cab with a top-mounted control panel, this engine had a 1,000-GPM pump and carried 500 gallons of water. Larry Shapiro photo
