This from Steve Redick:
The string of 11th battalion workers continues. This one was at Resurrection Hospital, a major hospital complex about a block from my house. Came in as a “cold box” and companies reported a fire in the chapel area on the 2nd floor. The alarm eventually rose to a 3-11 and EMS plan 1 with a special call for the MVU from O’Hare Field. This brought the brand new Engine 9 as well. Not much to see from the outside but it sounded like they had quite a bit of hidden fire that was difficult to expose, as well as difficulties ventilating the fire area. It also sounded like they relocated numerous patients within the building. A moderate amount of light smoke was visible at the roofline for a bit. A very unusual incident to say the least, and I’m sure there were issues and concerns that I could not see from the outside.Steve

This from Eric Haak:
Still time was 1432 hrs followed by a still and box alarm at 1434 and a 2-11 at 1443. Companies had fully involved back porches of a 2.5 story frame that had communicated to exposures on both sides and the alley garage. Exposures were a 2.5 story ordinary on side D and a 1.5 story ordinary on side B. The side D exposure also had a frame back porch addition. A mayday was called when a company became trapped by rapidly advancing fire conditions which elevated the alarm to a 3-11. Eventually there would be a second mayday as well and two firefighters were transported from the scene in yellow condition. Engine 28 was pumping in sector A, Engine 39 at the entrance to the alley on Loomis Street, Engine 29 at the corner of Lyman and Ma Benton Lane and Engine 8 on Bonfield Street. Tower Ladder 5 was set up but I don’t believe it was ever used. Squad 1A was brought into sector A and did go to work on the attic.

This from Eric Haak:
Chicago had a 3-11 alarm fire on their Southeast side early Sunday morning. The fire was reported shortly before 0430 hrs. The original fire building at 8719 S. Commercial Ave was a 2.5-story vacant frame with an old TV repair shop on the first and apartments above. This was apparently well-involved on arrival and was already communicating to a 1-story, ordinary laundrymat at 8723.Companies made an interior attack at first but the condition of both buildings was compromised and companies were pulled out of both structures just before 0500 hrs. 8725 Commercial was a former restaurant that was a 1-story ordinary with a second story frame addition. This frame addition became fully involved as fire vented through the roof of the Laundromat. There was slight communication to 8727 which was part of the same building as the restaurant.Seven engines were pumping at this incident. Engine 46 was in a spare and used its deck gun on the attic space of the original fire building. Engine 72 was on Commercial south of the fire buildings. Engines 81 & 82 were at the intersection of 87th and Commercial. Engine 104 was at the intersection of 87th and Exchange. Engine 126 was at the intersection of 87th & Houston. Engine 122 was at the south entrance of the alley on 88th Street.Various media outlets reported that a civilian jumped from a second-story window and was transported from the scene. The 3-11 was struck out at 0610.

This from Eric Haak:
The following is a synopsis of Chicago’s 3-11 at 36th and Homan on Monday, April 28th. The building was a Red-X which, for those who are not from Chicago, means that the building has been deemed structurally unsound and potentially too dangerous for interior operations. I live only 2 miles from this incident and left the moment it was dispatched. Traffic was almost at gridlock as people stopped in the middle of the Stevenson Expressway to gawk
The fire building ran adjacent to the expressway and was only about 100 yards off the roadway. This building appeared to be divided into three sections, each separated by a fire wall. The main body of fire was in the center section so even though the building was a good 200+ feet long, the section that was involved wasn’t that large. Some fire did appear to get into the front section but never advanced very far. When I passed on the Stevenson, there was heavy fire blowing out all of the second story windows in that middle section. By the time I parked and found my way back to the building, the truss roof had already burned through and most of the fire and smoke had diminished.
There were two access points to this incident. One was off of 36th and Kedzie and the image of Engine 23 heading back towards the fire building gives you an idea of the lead out here. It was about 450 yards from where Engine 99 hooked up to the hydrant at that corner. The other access point was at the dead end off Homan at 37th Place. Engine 34 had hose stretched across the railroad tracks and both Engines 38 and 39 were pumping from hydrants in the neighborhood south of the fire building.
I spent most of my time on the north side along the expressway where companies operated from an interior yard. Tower Ladder 54 had their aerial up fairly early as they were positioned in front of the building. Squad 1’s Snorkel was brought into the west part of the yard and had to wait for hose to be stretched before they could go to work. Eventually 6-7-6 was brought into the yard as well and after several lengths of hose were stretched, it went to work for the first time on a Chicago structure fire.
Companies went in-line to the east of the incident with Engines 88, 99, 107, 109, 23, 123, and 65 all pumping. There was also a Level I Hazmat with this incident. Many companies worked throughout the night and did not leave the scene until daylight broke on Tuesday.
