Working fire in Chicago, 12-30-20

This from Chi-Town Fire Photos:

12-30-2020

I took a ride to a fire in the 14th Battalion @ 2934 w 25th street. Companies landed with a 3-sty lightweight, with fire on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Companies made a push but were pulled out and went defensive for a few minutes. Engines 109, 23, and 107 were all lead out and had lines working. I arrived about 15 minutes into the alarm.

2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 4-11-20

This from Eric Haak:

1200 hrs today and just outside of Engine 109’s quarters. The 14th Battalion’s size-up was a 2-story ordinary furniture store, 25 x 80 with a fire on the 1st floor. The contents of the store were stacked floor to ceiling, front to back. Five minutes in, the box was requested. When I arrived, there was some fire on the second floor and companies were trying to unload the contents of the first. At 1255 hrs, the 2-11 was requested for manpower to assist the clearing out of the store. The alarm was struck out at 1330 hrs.

New use for old Chicago firehouse

Excerpts from blockclubchicago.org:

Little Village Environmental Justice Organization and Delta Institute asked neighbors more than two years ago what kind of development they wanted in their neighborhood as they mapped empty lots, vacant buildings and brownfield sites across Little Village. When it came to an abandoned fire station at 2358 S. Whipple St., neighbors saw potential, reimagining it as a commercial kitchen that would empower the bustling street vendors on the city’s Southwest Side.

Now, that vision could become a reality. The commercial kitchen project is among six proposals vying for the Pritzker Traubert Foundation’s $10 million Chicago Prize. The grant aims to bring private capital to the city’s South and West sides.  Last week, the foundation narrowed the field of finalists from 80 applicants down to six.

As one of the six finalists, Little Village Environmental Organization, a 25-year-old group fighting for environmental justice in the neighborhood, and Delta Institute, a Chicago-based nonprofit that collaborates to solve complex environmental challenges, will receive a $100,000 grant to fine-tune their pitch over four to six months, developing a business proposal that will be presented to the Chicago Prize committee. That committee will determine a winner of the prize in spring 2020.

As part of the plan, the fire station would be transformed into a community hub equipped with a commercial kitchen, food cart storage, and maintenance space. It would also have a small storefront for vendors to sell their products and have community space to host entrepreneurial and educational workshops. Mushrooms, micro-greens and other produce would be farmed in the building’s basement, too.

For years, residents have pushed the city to consider development that would put La Villita residents first, rather than develop logistic centers and warehouses that have inundated the neighborhood with diesel traffic and more pollution.

Although 60 percent of the city’s street-based food vendors come from Little Village and the neighborhood boasts some of the city’s best Mexican restaurants, there are no commercial kitchens in the neighborhood. The nearest is in North Lawndale, which is difficult for some people to get to from Little Village.

In addition to redeveloping the building, the groups also plans to build a food-cart cooperative led by the workers themselves. The aim is to create a closed-loop food economy for the neighborhood.

thanks Dennis

Working fire in Chicago, 4-18-18

This from Chi-Town Fire Photos:

Chicago firefighters were dispatched to a fire in a building @ 18th and Kedzie (1817 S Kedzie). The 14th Battalion landed with a 3-sty vacant, totally involved. Engine 107 deck gunned the rear on their arrival while Engine 109 lead out on side A. Shortly thereafter the 14th boxed it and was taking a defensive posture. In total, multiple hand lines, Tower 5, Squad 1, and a couple point advantages were used to knock down the fire.

2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 8/3/16

This from Eric Haak:

Shortly before 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday (8/3), the Chicago Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a fire at 3110 W. Fillmore.  Responding companies reported a large header and a working fire response was then given.  Engine 44 landed first and reported a fire in a one-story, commercial garage.  The fire building was less than a half mile directly down Fillmore from Engine 107’s quarters.  Engines 44 and 109 were the Still Alarm engines and 23 and 95 were on the box.  Engine 99 would also have a hydrant as well.  Battalion 14 requested a 2-11 shortly after arriving and gave a size-up of 1-story, 100 x 75, communicating to a 2-story ordinary, 25 x 50 with back porches and fire on the second floor.  The first picture you see here was taken 20 minutes in.  The fire actually turned out to be in two separate vacant commercial buildings in the center with some exposure to Eddie’s Towing which was largely spared. I heard Engines 5, 18, and 26 sent on the 2-11 so I don’t think 107 ever made it in.

3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 7-20-16

This from Josh Boyajian:

Here are shots I took Wednesday during the 3-11 alarm at 2036 w 21st place. I arrived after most of the fire was knocked in the original fire building along with the exposures. However, the attic of the coach house behind the original fire building got going well into the fire. I believe there were six hand lines, one deck gun, and one tower ladder working throughout this job. Enjoy
