Buffalo Grove Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The Buffalo Grove Village Board voted to approve a three-year contract with its firefighters union that includes a 2.5% increase in firefighters’ pay in the first year. Wage increases in years two and three of the contract will be negotiated separately through a wage reopener.

Under the new collective bargaining agreement, which runs through April 2023, firefighters would see a 2.52% increase in compensation in the first year, while lieutenants’ pay would bump up 2.0%.  A newly starting firefighter would earn $66,466, while the starting pay for a newly promoted lieutenant who also is a paramedic would be $113,900, according to the contract trustees approved Nov. 2.

The wage increases will have a $111,000 impact on the village’s budget. Beyond the pay raises, the pact adds no other costs to the village. The pact covers 51 individuals, 42 firefighter/paramedic positions and nine lieutenants.

2-Alarm house fire in Buffalo Grove, 8-26-20

Buffalo Grove police and firefighters were called to 25 Dellmont Court today (8/26/20) for a house fire. First arriving units had fire from a roof vent of a two-story, single-family house. The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 working fire and then to a MABAS Box Alarm for additional resources. Companies advanced several lines into the house and had difficulty gaining access to the attic. The fire self vented through the rear with flames and heavy smoke pushing out. An exterior line was used to darken down the fire before companies were again able to make an interior attack. The alarm was later elevated to a 2nd Alarm for additional manpower due to the excessive heat. Two firefighters were transported from the scene with heat related injuries.

Two Buffalo Grove engines and Long Grove Tanker 55 were on hydrants. An incomplete list of mutual aid companies includes units from Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Wheeling, Palatine, Countryside, Libertyville Lake Forest, Grayslake, Highland Park, Schaumburg, Mount Prospect, Deerfield, Northbrook, Lake Villa, Lake Zurich, Hoffman Estates, and Winnetka.

Buffalo Grove Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Earlier this year, Buffalo Grove officials agreed to abide by court ruling requiring the village to pay full pension benefits to the widow of Firefighter Kevin Hauber, who died of colon cancer in January 2018.

Now Kimberly Hauber is asking the village pay health insurance benefits for her family also, arguing they are entitled under the Public Safety Employee Benefits Act, which provides health care benefits at the municipality’s expense to a firefighter who dies in the line of duty responding to an emergency.

The village board will decide Monday whether to convene a hearing to hear her claims. If Buffalo Grove trustees decide to convene the hearing, as village staff recommends, the village president would appoint a hearing officer to oversee the proceedings. If the village does not follow staff’s recommendation Monday, the Hauber family would receive the benefits.

Kevin Hauber, 51, died after a nearly 24-year career with the Buffalo Grove Fire Department. The village’s fire pension board later determined that his cancer was caused by his work as a firefighter, making his survivors eligible for full line-of-duty benefits. After the village disputed the finding, a Lake County judge ruled that Kimberly Hauber was eligible to receive about $101,549 a year in pension benefits. The village lost its appeal and decided not to ask the Illinois Supreme Court to consider the case.

After the pension case was resolved, the family applied for health benefits.

In recommending the hearing, Village Manager Dane Bragg contends that there is insufficient evidence to establish that Hauber’s cancer resulted from a response to an emergency situation. If there is evidence, Kimberly Hauber should have the opportunity to provide it at the hearing, he said.

Buffalo Grove Fire Department news

Buffalo Grove police and fire were dispatched for a woman pinned under a car this morning (7/17/20) in the Chase Plaza shopping center at Lake-Cook and Arlington Heights roads. The woman’s leg was caught underneath her car which apparently was in neutral instead of park when she exited the vehicle. Patrons of the nearby stores were able to shift the car into park before police officers and firefighters arrived. The car was raised with airbags to facilitate the victim’s release. She was then transported to an area hospital.
