Bartlett Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

The Bartlett Fire Protection District and Northwest Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield are partnering to make the services of a Mobile Stroke Unit available to local patients, ensuring them the benefits of the earliest possible intervention. The unit is the first of its kind in Illinois and is a specialized ambulance that will be sent along with Bartlett Fire District paramedics whenever a dispatcher determines that a patient may be suffering from a stroke.

While stroke is the leading cause of disability and fifth leading cause of death in the U.S., studies have determined that early intervention can improve patient outcomes. The equipment and personnel on the Mobile Stroke Unit allow the team to quickly diagnose a stroke on-site and coordinate with a Northwestern Medicine neurologist to immediately begin treatment. Among the equipment is a CT scanner to take detailed pictures of the brain. Based on its findings and the type of stroke diagnosed, the neurologist may prescribe either clot-busting medication or a clotting agent to be administered immediately rather than waiting until arrival at the hospital.

More information about the new service is available at bartlettfire.com.

Box alarm fire last night in District 4. Companies on scene had to wait outside for ComEd to arrive and kill the power due to an electrical hazard. Chicago Fire Department Engine 2 (more)

From JCL Graphix Facebook Page:

We were hired to install lettering and graphics on CFD’s Fireboat Christopher Wheatley. The boat went through an extensive rehab internally as well as the exterior. All the graphics and lettering were recreations matching the original. It is still a cool project and we are honored to be part of the Christopher D. Wheatley Memorial Foundation

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

The Chicago fire academy is closed until further notice after an apparent COVID-19 outbreak impacting both students and instructors. Officials said they are working to determine the source of the outbreak at the Robert J. Quinn Fire Academy, located at 558 W. De Koven Street in the South Loop. It’s not clear how long the building will be shut down. Officials have not said exactly how many people tested positive for COVID-19, but there are multiple cases. Those individuals are now in isolation and none require hospitalization. For now, the other trainees will participate in remote instruction. The facility will undergo a deep cleaning.

Just last week, the department released a public service message urging people to take the virus seriously by wearing masks. Since the beginning of the pandemic, officials said there have been close to 300 cases of COVID-19 within the Chicago Fire Department. The virus took the lives of two department veterans, firefighters Mario Araujo and Edward Singleton. Both died in April.

Full statement from Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford:

“The health and safety of Chicago’s firefighters, paramedics and recruits are our utmost priority. That is why following multiple confirmed COVID-19 cases at the Robert J. Quinn Fire Academy, the Department has temporarily suspended training at the facility while we work to thoroughly clean and disinfect the entire facility. Furthermore, the Department will clean all employees’ work areas and any vehicles and equipment used. To prevent the spread of COVID-19 in all facilities, the Department continues to work with the Chicago Department of Public Health (CPDH) to ensure social distancing and public health guidelines are strictly enforced and that all individuals abide by them. The current class of recruits will continue their training through remote learning. All individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 will remain in isolation while any close contacts will quarantine. No individuals who have tested positive have required hospitalization, and we will continue to monitor their condition. The Department will provide an update when training resumes in the facility.”

Buffalo Grove Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Earlier this year, Buffalo Grove officials agreed to abide by court ruling requiring the village to pay full pension benefits to the widow of Firefighter Kevin Hauber, who died of colon cancer in January 2018.

Now Kimberly Hauber is asking the village pay health insurance benefits for her family also, arguing they are entitled under the Public Safety Employee Benefits Act, which provides health care benefits at the municipality’s expense to a firefighter who dies in the line of duty responding to an emergency.

The village board will decide Monday whether to convene a hearing to hear her claims. If Buffalo Grove trustees decide to convene the hearing, as village staff recommends, the village president would appoint a hearing officer to oversee the proceedings. If the village does not follow staff’s recommendation Monday, the Hauber family would receive the benefits.

Kevin Hauber, 51, died after a nearly 24-year career with the Buffalo Grove Fire Department. The village’s fire pension board later determined that his cancer was caused by his work as a firefighter, making his survivors eligible for full line-of-duty benefits. After the village disputed the finding, a Lake County judge ruled that Kimberly Hauber was eligible to receive about $101,549 a year in pension benefits. The village lost its appeal and decided not to ask the Illinois Supreme Court to consider the case.

After the pension case was resolved, the family applied for health benefits.

In recommending the hearing, Village Manager Dane Bragg contends that there is insufficient evidence to establish that Hauber’s cancer resulted from a response to an emergency situation. If there is evidence, Kimberly Hauber should have the opportunity to provide it at the hearing, he said.
