Buffalo Grove Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Earlier this year, Buffalo Grove officials agreed to abide by court ruling requiring the village to pay full pension benefits to the widow of Firefighter Kevin Hauber, who died of colon cancer in January 2018.

Now Kimberly Hauber is asking the village pay health insurance benefits for her family also, arguing they are entitled under the Public Safety Employee Benefits Act, which provides health care benefits at the municipality’s expense to a firefighter who dies in the line of duty responding to an emergency.

The village board will decide Monday whether to convene a hearing to hear her claims. If Buffalo Grove trustees decide to convene the hearing, as village staff recommends, the village president would appoint a hearing officer to oversee the proceedings. If the village does not follow staff’s recommendation Monday, the Hauber family would receive the benefits.

Kevin Hauber, 51, died after a nearly 24-year career with the Buffalo Grove Fire Department. The village’s fire pension board later determined that his cancer was caused by his work as a firefighter, making his survivors eligible for full line-of-duty benefits. After the village disputed the finding, a Lake County judge ruled that Kimberly Hauber was eligible to receive about $101,549 a year in pension benefits. The village lost its appeal and decided not to ask the Illinois Supreme Court to consider the case.

After the pension case was resolved, the family applied for health benefits.

In recommending the hearing, Village Manager Dane Bragg contends that there is insufficient evidence to establish that Hauber’s cancer resulted from a response to an emergency situation. If there is evidence, Kimberly Hauber should have the opportunity to provide it at the hearing, he said.

East Joliet FPD donates fire engine to the Pink Heals Joliet Area Chapter

From the East Joliet Fire Protection District Facebook page:

Today…. was an AMAZING Day. We have been keeping a secret.. a pretty big (fire truck size) secret. Today… we dedicated our 3rd Pink Fire Truck (4th Pink Heals Joliet Area Chapter vehicle) to our FABULOUS friend, (that we LOVE so much)…. Michelle Darguzis. ?
Michelle has been a wonderful friend to our Chapter from the beginning. From requesting visits for people she knew were battling, to setting up the super fun, “On the Hunt for Pink Trucks” Scavenger Hunt… to speaking for us at our Mother’s Day Walk and attending several of our Events. She truly has been there for us as one of our biggest supporters. Today we were able to honor her. What a surprise… and we are all just so thrilled to welcome our new truck, MICHELLE, to our Chapter. Our Director of Events, Debbie Trimmer, said it best… “Today was the BEST DAY of 2020!”?

This AWESOME truck and the dedication for Michelle would not have been possible without some very important people!! First.. a HUGE THANK YOU to East Joliet Fire!!! 4 years ago, East Joliet, along with Fire Chief Scholtes and the Fire District Board voted to donate one of their retired trucks to Pink Heals. Since that time, Chief Scholtes passed away. We now will carry his name everywhere we go with a beautiful plaque in his honor. Thank you so much East Joliet Fire!!!?

Our next HUGE THANK YOU goes out to our wonderful friends at ALL AMERICAN RECYCLING!!! Last Fall.. AAR contacted us to let us know that they wanted to help us get this 3rd truck on the road. AAR has been so very supportive of Pink Heals with our Annual Mothers Day Walk and the Save the Cans Fundraisers. We couldn’t possibly be more appreciative for all they have done for us. Thank you so much AAR!!! ?

Our next HUGE THANK YOU is to MO-GRAPHICS in New Lenox!!! AAR reached out… and MO-GRAPHICS generously wrapped our MICHELLE truck!! She is GORGEOUS and we are so extremely thankful for all they did for us. Thank you MO-GRAPHICS!!! ?

Please help us send HUGE THANK YOU’S to East Joliet Fire, All American Recycling and MO-GRAPHICS!!!! and…. help us WELCOME our newest “girl” MICHELLE!!!
