Buffalo Grove Fire Department news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Buffalo Grove trustees Monday approved a new salary agreement with the Buffalo Grove Professional Firefighter/Paramedic Association that runs from May 1, 2020 until April 30, 2021 and raises the salaries of firefighters/paramedics 2.5% and fire lieutenants 2%. The budget impact is $111,000. The salary agreement is separate from the main collective bargaining agreement, which was scheduled to end April 30. But trustees extended that agreement through Oct. 31, in recognition of employees’ response to the pandemic.

During the virtual meeting, a resident called in and told trustees that the village should be more focused on funding pensions. “Where is the shared sacrifice?” he added. “I understand we want to be there for front-line workers during a pandemic. But let’s be for them by making sound decisions for the long-term financial health of this village. Let’s take this money and fund their pensions more instead.” He also expressed concern starting salaries for firefighter/paramedics would move from $64,000 under the old agreement to $71,000 after one year under the new agreement.

The village is funding pensions at 78%, which is considered acceptable.

Naperville Fire Department news

Excerpts from the Dailyherald.com:

An early morning fire in the basement of a single-family house in Naperville left the home uninhabitable. Firefighters were called to the house at 3:09 a.m. on the 1600 block of Gartner Road when residents reported smoke coming from the basement.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke upon entering the home. It took 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze and another 45 minutes to extinguish smoldering materials and ventilate the house.

About 25 firefighters responded to the scene to battle the fire. The cause is still under investigation.

Fire service news – Coronavirus COVID-19 (more)

Excerpts from fox32chicago.com:

The Chicago Fire Department announced Monday that the families of two Chicago firefighters who died of COVID-19 will receive line-of-duty benefits. The benefits will provide the families of Mario Araujo and Edward Singleton with one-year’s salary and funds for funeral expenses. The department will also assist the families in obtaining other federal, state, and local benefits afforded to members who have died in the line of duty.

“Our current situation is unprecedented in the history of our department and will be addressed accordingly,” Fire Commissioner Richard Ford II said in the statement. “These two members made the ultimate sacrifice to protect those whom they swore an oath to serve. We will not forget our obligation to their families in this time of crisis.”

Any death of a CFD member will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis for determination of line-of-duty status, he said.

Singleton, a 33-year veteran of the department, died April 14 from complications of COVID-19. The 55-year-old worked at the firehouse at Midway Airport, and leaves behind a wife and two adult children. One week earlier, Araujo became the first firefighter of the department to die from the coronavirus. Araujo, 47, joined the fire department in October 2003. He was single.

As of Friday evening, 109 members of CFD have tested positive for COVID-19, while 37 of them have already returned to duty. There were 12 members quarantined after being exposed to someone who later tested positive for the disease.
