Historic 4-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 2-14-62

This from Steve Redick:

I found my dad’s clippings of the 4-11 at 1365 E 70th St 2/14/62. As many of you may know this is the fire where Bob and Ray Hoff’s dad was killed. Since many were not old enough to recall this I am sending the clippings for your perusal. So many years later and the photos still bring tears to my eyes. Two wonderful families totally devastated.

This from Asher Heimermann:

Milwaukee Fire Station #36 near North 27th Street and Capitol Drive was evacuated on Monday night due to a suspicious bag. The Milwaukee Police Bomb Squad and Milwaukee Fire Dept. HAZMAT Team was called to investigate.

A bomb scare at a Milwaukee fire station shut down a city block for hours Monday night and the fire station at 4060 N. 27th St. was evacuated. There was a backpack left in a location that was suspicious in nature.

Investigators determined the backpack did not contain anything harmful or life threatening.

New engine for St Charles FD (more)

Excerpts from the kcchronicle.com:

The St. Charles Fire Department will hold a traditional push-in ceremony and dedication for its new fire engine.

All are welcome to come to the ceremony and dedication at 9 a.m. Saturday at Fire Station #1, 112 N. Riverside Ave. in downtown St. Charles. After brief remarks, the old Engine 101 will be retired and the new Engine 101 will be pushed into the station. Following this, Tri-Com will sound a still alarm.

The push-in ceremony honors a longstanding fire service tradition dating back to the1800s when fire departments used hand-drawn pumpers and horse-drawn equipment, according to a news release from the St. Charles Fire Department. Upon returning to the station after a fire call, the horses could not easily back the equipment into the station, the release stated.

So they were disconnected from the fire equipment and firefighters would push the equipment back into the bays themselves, according to the release. Today, the ceremony signifies retiring an old engine and putting a new engine into service.

Fatal fire in Bensenville

Excerpts thedailyherald.com:

A man in his mid-80s was killed in a Tuesday morning house fire near Bensenville.

The man’s wife reported the blaze in the basement of the tri-level house on the 4N500 block of Church Road near White Pines Golf Club. Dispatchers received a 911 call at 8:23 a.m. Firefighters arrived at 8:30 a.m., met the wife outside the house and began battling the blaze which was quickly extinguished.

The man likely died from his injuries before firefighters were called, Bensenville Fire Protection District Chief Michael Spain said. The man had been confined to his bed for about 20 years, and fire officials had been to his house numerous times for medical emergencies. The fire was contained to that room, but there was smoke damage throughout the house. The structure was left uninhabitable.

The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the blaze.
