Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:
Facing rising costs, Wood Dale Fire Protection District officials say they have no other option but to ask voters for roughly $1.5 million in additional property taxes. The referendum question will appear on the March ballot. If approved, the higher tax rate would take effect in June 2021. If the ballot measure is approved, the district’s annual property tax revenue will increase to roughly $7.2 million from about $5.7 million. The owner of a $250,000 home pays roughly $700 in property taxes to the district. If the tax hike is approved, that amount will increase by an estimated $200.
The decision to pursue the ballot measure came when it was apparent that — despite budget cuts, using reserve money, getting grants and partnering with neighboring districts to reduce costs — “our operating expenses are going to outpace our ability to generate the needed revenues.”
If approved, the additional money would allow the district to have eight firefighters working during each of its three shifts. More than 90% of the time last year, the district had a minimum staffing level of six firefighters per shift between its two fire stations.
The district has two fire stations that were built in the early 1970s. Both are needed to properly respond to all areas of the district. Station 69 at 411 Park Lane needs an estimated $450,00 in repairs, including a new roof and HVAC system.
Extra revenue would allow the district to replace aging vehicles. The average age of the fleet is more than 11 years old, and the district is experiencing more breakdowns. It would also will help the district pay for rising administrative costs, including double-digit price increases for insurance and higher pension contributions.
In a letter to taxpayers, Wood Dale fire officials said the district has spent more than 80 years serving, protecting and helping residents. “The district now needs, and respectfully asks for, your careful consideration on the upcoming March referendum so that we can continue to provide the highest level of service to our community,” the letter reads.
The district plans to educate residents about the ballot measure during a town hall meeting, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 20 at the headquarters station, 589 N. Wood Dale Road.
The district, which covers Wood Dale and a small part of Itasca, last had a referendum 2002.

From the Cary Fire Protection District:
The Cary Fire Protection District sadly announces the passing of retired Deputy Chief William “Bill” Gitzke. Bill, 76, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 15, 2019 surrounded by family.
He was born February 15, 1943 in his parents’ home on West Main Street in Cary.
His faith was of utmost importance to him. Bill was an active member of Cary’s St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where he attended school and was an alter boy.
He attended Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin and went on to attend the electronics and technology program at DeVry University in Chicago. Bill was drafted into the United States Army in 1965 being stationed in Germany until he returned home in 1967.
After returning from the Army, Bill married the love of his life, Carol. Together they raised two children, a daughter, Shelly Van Anrooy and son William “Billy” Gitzke.
Bill owned and operated G Communications, where he installed and repaired communications systems for public safety agencies across Illinois. He was well known and respected throughout the county for his knowledge of communications equipment.
Bill followed in his father’s footsteps becoming a paid-on-call member of the Cary Fire Protection District in 1961. After completing firefighter and emergency medical technician training, he was promoted to lieutenant, then captain, then assistant chief, and finally deputy chief, the department’s second in command.
Being a firefighter was not just a career to him, it was a life long passion. Bill always went above and beyond the call of duty. After serving 51 years, Bill retired from the Cary Fire Protection District in February 2013, becoming the longest serving member in the department’s history. Bill’s love of the fire service continued to be a family tradition when his son Billy, became the third generation of Gitzke’s to serve the Cary Fire Protection District. Father and son worked side by side for 15 years.
Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carol, daughter Shelly Van Anrooy, son William Gitzke, grandchildren Brenna and Chase Van Anrooy, Katelyn, Samantha, Grace, Billy, and Joey Gitzke, his sister Linda Verdung, and many relatives on both sides of the family.

Excerpts from Evanstonnow.com:
Evanston Firefighters found smoke coming from the roof and windows of a residence at 1017 Mulford St. when they arrived on the scene about 4:25 p.m. Wednesday 11/20/19.
As the first crews arrived on scene, they determined that the fire was in the first floor kitchen and was already extending into the second floor through a void space. None of the residents were at home, but a dog perished due to smoke inhalation.
Evanston fire companies were assisted by neighboring communities in both handling the fire as well as providing fire and EMS coverage for the remainder of the city during the incident.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

This from Mike Summa for #TBT:
For TBT- Pirsch fire trucks were a big part of the American fire service. Many city and suburban fire departments utilized this type of apparatus. Many years ago I mailed a letter to Pirsch asking for literature. These are a sample of what was sent.Mike Summa
