Hammond Fire Department

This from Eric Haak:

Hammond, Indiana had a rather large commercial fire during the early morning hours of April 29th. The fire pretty much incinerated an old 2-story in the heart of downtown. I took the opportunity to get a few images of some of their rigs that were on scene once the sun came up and I thought I would share them here.

Mattoon Fire Department news

Excerpts from wandtv.com:

The City of Mattoon is suing the Mattoon Firefighters Local 691 over an award that gives them the option to remove the ambulances from the City of Mattoon and to impact bargain the result of the award.  The city says the union is not complying with the arbitration, because an agreement has not been reached on the removal of the ambulances.

The union has been negotiating with the city of the successor contract since January.  The union thinks the best option is for the fire department to remain in the ambulance service and offered to reduce staff and cut department expenses to meet the city council’s monetary goals.

The city has said reducing manpower is the only way to achieve their goals. The parties have met a dozen times trying to come up with the best solution.

A separate Arbitration award was issued in April which required the city to bring the staffing level up to 30 and maintain it there in a manner consistent with the contract. Since May of last year, the city has reduced staffing to 22 members. The union says this is in direct violation of their contract.

McHenry Township Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the Northwestherald.com:

The McHenry Home Depot donated supplies to the McHenry Township Fire Protection District to build six dollhouse training props for a fire dynamics burn demonstration later this month.

“We are pleased that Home Depot partnered with us for this important training exercise,” Chief Tony Huemann said. “The generous donation of plywood and other supplies was used to build structures resembling large dollhouses that will allow our firefighters to get hands-on experience in a unique and creative fire and smoke flow demonstration. This is learning beyond the classroom.”

Kevin Tracz, a McHenry Township Fire Protection District resident and a firefighter in a neighboring community, volunteered his time to construct six dollhouse structures using the donated wood. As part of the training, the dollhouses will be burned, and fire behavior will be simulated by opening windows and venting the roof to show fire and smoke flow paths.

“This is a safe and visual method to show the dangers of poorly timed or undisciplined ventilation,” Huemann said. “We are very appreciative of the sponsorship of materials for this event from our friends and neighbors at the McHenry Home Depot.”

This training exercise will be in conjunction with a live burn of a house in Johnsburg at the end of May. For information about the training, call the district at 815-385-0075.

Joliet Fire Department news

Excerpts from the Herald-news.com:

The City of Joliet is taking a closer look at overtime costs, especially in the fire and police departments.

The fire department has spent more than $1 million on overtime, which is 60 percent of its overtime budget for the year, according to a report presented to the Joliet City Council Finance Committee this week.

The police department has spent only 26 percent of its overtime budget, although the total of $652,000 makes it the second-highest among city departments.

Administration is preparing an analysis of police and fire overtime for the Finance Committee, City Manager David Hales told the committee.

The issue of fire department overtime came up in February, when Fire Chief Joseph Formhals sought council approval for the acquisition of a truck, which would have required lower staffing. He said he was trying to address overtime amid staffing shortages. Firefighters objected. The mayor called the $300,000 spent in December on fire department overtime obscene. Eventually, the plan was shelved.

The analysis presented next month will consider the effect of vacant positions on overtime, as well as how sick time and time off for workers’ compensation contribute to the costs. The size of overtime budgets tends to be connected to the size of the departments and the need to call in staff for emergency help.

The city has spent $507,000 on overtime in the Public Works Department through March. Public works has used up a higher percentage of its annual overtime budget, 73 percent, than the fire department.

Other departments have used even higher percentages of the budget, even though the overtime costs are relatively low. The financed has used 94 percent of its overtime budget while spending a little more than $7,000.

So far this year, the city has spent about $2.6 million on overtime.

Cancer in the fire service (more)

Excerpts from the Poughkeepsiejournal.com:

A bill, which has passed the Senate and is in the House of Representatives, calls for the creation of a national firefighter cancer registry. The registry would be managed by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. The registry would compile the incidences, make anonymous data available to researchers, and allow for increased collaboration between firefighters, experts and those investigating the links between the profession and the illnesses. The House of Representatives is expected to pass amended legislation in the coming weeks.

Research that has found a strong connection between firefighting and an increased risk for several major cancers including testicular, stomach, multiple myeloma and brain cancers. Firefighters are exposed to a range of harmful toxins such as asbestos and flame retardants that are linked to cancer.
