This from Steve Redick
Took in this job a few days ago. Not much to see firewise but a couple of interesting things. The building was in horrendous shape..several parts of the roof were collapsed (prior to fire) and access was very limited at best. Ironically this was not classed as a red x building. I was able to get some video and photos of a Chicago stripping ladder in use as a battering ram to knock out the plywood window coverings. This is a great tool and pretty unique to Chicago…seldom used for climbing but primarily used to pull up roofing materials during ventilation.. Class A foam was also used at this alarm as well. The squad had a spare snorkel but some decent rig shots were available.Steve

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know where the spare snorkel (G482) was originally assigned? I thought I read it was squad 1, then went to squad 5 for a number of years, before going to the spare pool.
Can’t say they didn’t build ’em tough back then! I doubt the new rigs will last as long…way too many electronics, and way too delicate.

Yes the rigs are looking mighty sad these day’s! But it’s not because the Cfd doesn’t have their own shops anymore. It’s because they are old and going to the scrap heap! Yes it sucks that they look so crappy, but why would you spend money on 25 plus yr old rigs? It’s a miracle they still run. At least the spare fleet is getting an upgrade due to the purchase of the newer rigs. Sad to see the Pierce’s going into the spare pool. I can’t believe that spare snorkel is still running. Old girl has been around awhile. All will be well when the new “Rosenbauer” squads hit the streets! Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!

While its probably a waste to upgrade the lighting, these and the towers are out so frequently, I’m surprised they have receive some extra lighting for increased visibility.

So sorry but the spare rigs were in better shape when CFD had its own shops, I don’t care how old they are, they are really looking bad these days.

Yeah its Fleet’s fault the 26 year old Snorkel doesn’t look good……

I was thinking the same thing, Crabby.
That spare snorkel has seen better days, fleet needs to take better care of these rigs.

That building looks like it could have been a fire station at one time.
