Area fire department receive grant money

From the Associated Press

Six fire departments across Illinois will split nearly $300,000 in federal grants aimed at improving response to fires and other emergencies.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin announced the grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

Since 2001, the grants have provided about $5.25 billion to first-responder organizations. The money has been used for training, vehicles and to help departments purchase personal protective equipment.

Among the Illinois departments receiving funds this year are Westchester Fire Department in suburban Chicago, LaSalle Fire Department in central Illinois and the Elkville Fire Department, in the southern part of the state.

Bolingbrook to eliminate fire chief position

This from a reader:

Thought this might be of interest to the Chicago Area Fire readers. Bolingbrook will remove the fire chief position from their budget beginning May 1st, 2013 and current police chief Kevin McCarthy will become the public safety director. Bolingbrook laid off 3 firefighters a few years ago, I’m not sure if it’s related or if there are still budget issues.

Thank you for the website, I really enjoy visiting and learning more about the fire service in the process.

This from WJOL.com:

Bolingbrook Combining Fire and Police Departments

In Bolingbrook, some readjustments are being made that involve a couple of “two departments into one” situations.  The police and fire departments are going to be combined into a PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT, with current Police Chief Kevin McCarthy serving as Director of Public Safety.  Current Fire Chief Dave Litton has been dropped from the new city budget.  Mayor Roger Claar says he did initiate this effort, and simply felt THE TIME HAD COME.

A deputy fire chief AND a deputy police chief will report to McCarthy.  Claar says ANOTHER CHANGE to be made is rolling the public works and community development departments together.

The changes will take place when the new budget takes over on May 1st.

 thanks SP

Future of Montgomery dispatch center uncertain

The Aurora Beacon News has an article about possible changes for the Montgomery Dispatch Center:

Trustees in the Village of Montgomery are expected to discuss the future of their police dispatchers at their board meeting Monday night.

The catalyst for the change was when Sugar Grove notified the village they are moving from having Montgomery dispatch calls for their police and fire protection. The $200,000 in revenue from Sugar Grove will also go away and the village is left to decide if they will continue to operate their dispatch center, with less revenue or also move.

“The village currently provides dispatch services to Sugar Grove Police and
Fire, Montgomery Countryside Fire, Aurora Township Fire and Waubonsee
Community College,” according to Police Chief Dan Meyers.

Acting Village Administrator and Finance Administrator Jeff Zoephel said
the switch to a regional group would amount to a cost savings but said that
figure is not yet available.

Meyers also states in the memo he would recommend the village partner with
Ken-Com Public Safety Dispatch. “Currently the majority of the Village’s
population, (57 percent) is in Kendall County. Also, the majority of our
commercial and retail businesses are in Kendall County.”

New engine for Skokie

This from Jeff Rudolph:

We picked it up Tuesday morning. Skokie E-17, 2013 Pierce Dash CF on a PUC body ( first delivered to Illinois) 1500/500. It’s uniqueness is the rear hosebed. Trying to get the shoulder loads as low as possible we designed slide-out trays below the hosebed to hold the 1 3/4″ and 2 1/2″ shoulder loads, a first for Pierce. Should be in service in about a month, will get you a nice shot in the spring. Jeff Rudolph.

Boy saves family from CO poisoning

The Chicago Tribune has an article about a boy that is credited with saving the lives of a family that was sickened by carbon monoxide in Antioch.

Antioch fire officials are crediting a quick-thinking boy for alerting them in time to a family of four found unconscious in their home from carbon monoxide poisoning this morning.

The boy had gone to the home in the 1100 block of Bowles Road where his girlfriend lived with her sister and parents around 5:55 a.m. but got no answer at the door, said Antioch Fire Chief John Nixon. He looked through the living room window and saw his girlfriend’s father passed out and called 911, Nixon said.

“He said no one was answering the door and he couldn’t get in and he called in and said he could see a person laying down in the living room,” Nixon said. “If it wasn’t for this young man, I’m pretty sure we’d have a much worse outcome.

“He is (a hero), he had a lot to do with a good outcome so far.”

Paramedics broke through the door and also found a person unconscious on the first floor, while firefighters found two other people unconscious in their beds. The family dog was also passed out, Nixon said.

All of the people in the home and the dog were revived, Nixon said. “They evacuated the patients from the house,” he said, adding that the residents were taken in serious condition to hospitals.

Mayday at Chicago fire 2-26-13

The Chicago Tribune has an article detailing a fire this morning where two Chicago firefighters fell through the porch of a home into the basement. Both suffered minor injuries and were rescued quickly.

Two firefighters were hurt when a porch collapsed at an extra-alarm fire in Gresham on the South Side this morning, sending them through the floor into the basement, officials said.

The collapse trapped both firefighters and officials called a mayday as firefighters scrambled to free them. They were finally able to reach the two by breaking through a side window, and the injured firefighters were taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital.

The firefighters, both veterans of the department, suffered relatively minor injuries but the situation “could have been a lot worse,” said Deputy Fire Commissioner John McNicholas.

“Had we had fire in that basement, things could have been a different story here,” he said.

Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire 2-17-13

This from Dieterich Herndobler:

Sorry for the delay in getting the pics to you, but I was able to catch the knockdown of the Still & Box at 9160 S Green at about 0900 hrs. I chased the header coming home from shift. The bulk of the fire was in the rear of a large truss roof structure. I arrived as first water was put on the fire. The best view of the flames was from the west side on Vincennes, unfortunately I was without my DSLR and there was a chain link fence and a large setback from Vincennes to the building and it was backlit. Initial in companies reported water trouble. Once they got water on the fire, it was knocked quick.
