The color of fire trucks

The Wall Street Journal has a story which touches on the time honored fire service debate about the color of fire apparatus. The article is a piece about a small district in Florida which maintains a fleet that is painted a non-traditional color.

Throughout the rest of the country, red is the typical color for emergency vehicles—fire-engine red as the shade is often and aptly called. But for nearly four decades, firefighters in Palm Beach Gardens have opted for a garish yellow-green that they argue is easier to spot from a distance, even in the pea soup of a South Florida summer thunderstorm. The proof that Fire Chief Pete Bergel often cites: In his 30 years with the city, no fire-department vehicle has been rear-ended. The color “is in your face,” he says.

Local departments that are not red include Elk Grove Township in Division 1, Pingree-Grove and Rutland-Dundee in Division 2, Glencoe in Division 3, Fox Lake and Winthrop Harbor in Division 4, Clarendon Hills in Division 10, Fox River & Countryside in Division 13, Coal City in Division 15, Lisle-Woodridge in Division 16, Elwood in Division 19, and Crete in Division 27.

Over the years, many departments in the area have switched to red or a red two-tone color scheme from white, yellow, and lime green.

Orland board president want to merge 10 districts

The Chicago Tribune reports that:;

Orland Fire Protection District Board President James Hickey  … “My vision is not for just two districts, but that 10 districts will join, and you have a total cost savings where you can increase services, save money for the taxpayers and bring everything down to a more uniform level,” he said. “I really see that as the future.”

Structural Collapse in Long Grove 4-9-12

The Long Grove Fire District was called on Monday to inspect a house in unincorporated Palatine where a car had previously rolled into the side of the structure. Fire officials found a corner of the brick house with extensive damage and an attached enclosed deck that was also damaged and collapsing away from the house.

A structural collapse response was initiated to shore up the deck to prevent further damage to the house. In addition to Long Grove units, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, Palatine Rural Ambulance 36, and squads from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Barrington, Libertyville, Lake Zurich, and Buffalo Grove responded with technicians. The Divisions 4&5 roll-off container with supplemental lumber was also requested to replenish the supplies that were depleted from the on-scene squads.

Fire in Buffalo Grove 4-8-12

Shortly before 11PM on Sunday, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department received several calls reporting flames seen from a house at 275 W. Dundee Road. First arriving units had fire in an outdoor storage area that had communicated to the structure. The alarm was upgraded to a working fire response bringing Long Grove, Palatine, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods companies to assist the Buffalo Grove and Arlington Heights units already on the scene.

The building was once a single family residence that had been converted to offices several years ago. Fire got into the eaves and was stopped before taking hold of the attic. Most mutual aid companies were returned shortly after arriving.

Crash and fire on I94 (Edens) 4-8-12

Two car accident and fire I94 Edens at the Kennedy 4-8-12

Tim Olk submitted the following:

Two cars passed me doing well over 100 mph, one on my left and the other on the right at the Edens/Kennedy split. As they made the sharp turn I saw both lost control.  All I saw was smoke and car parts flying. Got on 9-1-1 and said there were 2 cars on fire and the need for a squad for a possible pin-in, 2 ambos and that I was searching for the occupants. Both cars were on fire . The upside down Caddy was on fire and it looked like both drivers were ejected. The guy was walking and the girl had to be pulled away from the car . The other driver asked me if everything was ok then walked away but later was found up the Edens with some other cars that had stopped. I hate the Kennedy at night after 2am, it’s a raceway.

Chicago 2-11 Alarm Fire 4-5-12

Thanks to Dennis McGuire, Jr. for submitting the following links to articles on a 2-11 Alarm Fire at 48th & Ashland on Thursday April 5.

The Sun-Times has photos HERE and ABC has an article with video HERE

A big fire broke out in a Chicago appliance store and spread to four other buildings Thursday night. Five ambulances were rushed to the scene.

The fire happened in the 4800-block of South Ashland.

“Because of the age of the structure and the wind conditions, the fire spread quickly across the structure,” said Chicago firefighter Timothy Sampey,

River Forest looking into fire district

An article at OakPark.com  mentions that:

River Forest officials will be doing some research in the coming fiscal year to investigate the possible creation of a cost-saving, multi-village fire district in the future.

River Forest Village Administrator Eric Palm said cost would be a major component in discussing transition from a local department governed by the village to a “fire district,” which are separate entities that can levy taxes and would be run by a board of elected or appointed trustees, said Craig Haigh, the fire chief in Hanover Park, a village intersected by Cook and DuPage counties.

River Forest Trustee Michael Gibbs, who sits on the village’s fire committee, said he thought the decision to bring up fire districts again next fiscal year was mostly driven by finances and not necessarily service improvements. The same committee discussed the matter in 2009, and the village first explored the idea about 15 years before that.

Gibbs said there was interest this time around, but the concept had to gain some traction.

“Does a little town really need that apparatus to just serve that little town?” he asked. “If those smaller communities can pool their resources, that’s a big plus.”
