2nd Alarm Fire plus Haz Mat Box Alarm in Cary 3-6-13

An explosion occurred in Cary at 640 Industrial Drive Wednesday.

This is from the Chicago Tribune:

Three people were injured this afternoon after several explosions at a paint manufacturing warehouse in northwest suburban Cary, officials said.

Cary police and firefighters were called to the Fox Valley Services, 640 Industrial Drive, at about 1:15 p.m. after a report of an explosion, said Cary Police Chief Steven Casstevens. The fire was struck out at about 5 p.m., he said.

When emergency crews arrived a second explosion occurred in the 2-story warehouse building, said Casstevens. The combination of the two explosions caused the front of the brick structure to be blown off, he said. The explosions also caused a small hole at the rear of the building, he said.

Three workers at the facility were taken to area hospitals for treatment, Casstevens said. Their conditions were not immediately available but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, he said.

A hazerdous materials response was called the building as a was a unit that dispenses foam to put out the fire at the paint manufacturing facility, he said.

Jim Hursh said sometime around 1 p.m. he heard an explosion come from Fox Valley Services, 640 Industrial Drive, located about a block from his own business, Whitey’s Crane Rentals.

“We walked up to the door (and) holy crap there was … major smoke coming out of the building,” Hursh said.

He then heard a second explosion. Within moments, Hursh saw several fire trucks and ambulances arrive and at least one man who appeared to have been burned on his face.

Veath said two of the three employees injured in the fire were transported to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, and one was flown by helicopter from Good Shepherd to a burn center. There were no injuries to firefighters, he noted.

More from Scott Peterson:

Several pics of the Cary 2nd alarm & Hazmat Box about 15 mins after FD first arrived on scene. Unfortunately I had to leave and I guess things got real interesting after that point.  This front wall is at one end of the bldg, and looking at Google Maps, looks like almost a seperate bldg attached to the main one. This front wall about 1/2 of the height was blown out the entire length. There was also explosion damage in the rear which had the CN&W RR tracks and Rt 14 (NW Hwy) in back of. In front are Flammable tanks that co’s where greatly concerned about having an incident with them. They had 2-3 large handlines led out as well as their tower ladder flowing. As I was leaving the Algonquin Tower ladder was moved up and used. Channel’s 5 & 7 have some good aerial video. Pics where quick as the entire area was being evacuated for about 2 blocks due to the hazards.

Early this afternoon the Buffalo Grove Fire Department received a call reporting a fire in the rear of a home at 214 Navajo Trail. Police arrived and confirmed a fire before the fire department arrived. The first arriving units found smoke in the rear of the ranch house and pulled a line. They discovered a fire along the rear of the house that was burning below the patio door. One line extinguished the fire as a second company entered the house and verified that there was no extension.

Fire in Buffalo Grove 4-8-12

Shortly before 11PM on Sunday, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department received several calls reporting flames seen from a house at 275 W. Dundee Road. First arriving units had fire in an outdoor storage area that had communicated to the structure. The alarm was upgraded to a working fire response bringing Long Grove, Palatine, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods companies to assist the Buffalo Grove and Arlington Heights units already on the scene.

The building was once a single family residence that had been converted to offices several years ago. Fire got into the eaves and was stopped before taking hold of the attic. Most mutual aid companies were returned shortly after arriving.
