Chicago FD begins transition to digital radios

An article on the CBS Chicago website mentions the CFD has begun the transition to digital radios, beginning with EMS.

After six years of testing – and spending more than $20 million – the Chicago Fire Department has finally started to go digital.

The switchover from analog to digital radios began Sunday at 8 a.m., with EMS paramedics getting the new radios.

“The fire department has been testing the system, along with OEMC (the Office of Emergency Management and Communications), and the Fire Department at this time is satisfied with the performance of the system, and we are ready to go live,” Langford said.

Langford says firefighters will start training with the digital radios in June and will switch to digital before the end of the year.

“Every person on the rig will have a radio,” Langford says. That will be a first for the Fire Department – where everyone has a radio.

Langford says the department will keep the option to switch back to analog, if necessary.

Crimson name to disappear – become Spartan ERV

If you’re looking for the Crimson Fire Apparatus website … you won’t find it right now. Spartan Motors Inc. the parent company of Spartan Chassis and Crimson Fire Apparatus is rebranding the Crimson name to Spartan ERV (now that’s catchy!). Only their Facebook page is currently responding.

Spartan Motors is the parent company of four subsidiaries known for performance and being the first to market with innovative products:

  • Spartan Chassis™
  • Spartan ERV™
  • Utilimaster™

Spartan ERV: Star Series, Legend Series, Classic Series

  • Pumpers
  • Tankers and heavy-duty tankers
  • Quick-attack vehicles
  • Light-duty rescue vehicles
  • Aerials
  • Wildland/Urban Interface
  • The Boomer™

An article HERE mentions the change on the eve of the FDIC.

From the Lansing State Journal:

Spartan Motors Inc. is overhauling its emergency vehicle unit, teaming up with European companies and renaming the division in a bid to bolster the business.

The specialty vehicle and chassis maker, which makes fire trucks and other emergency vehicles, performs defense subcontracting work and produces commercial delivery vehicles, said Tuesday it has renamed its former Crimson-Fire division Spartan ERV and named former division Vice President Dennis Schneider to head the unit and Spartan Chassis. Spartan also outlined other strategies that have been six months in the making.

Spartan ERV is teaming up with Gimaex, a French emergency response company to share technology and help expand in the U.S. and global markets, Schneider said.

This from the RRP:

In December of 2011, the Remembrance Rescue Project acquired the last of the Rescue trucks from 9/11, Rescue 5. Rescue 5 was brought to the Project’s Chicago facility and is undergoing its restoration, where it will debut with the Project at FDIC in Indy this month.

The Rescue was recently repainted by Capital Truck Body in Cicero and is currently at MPC Lighting in Northbrook for lights. Jacquette Custom Lettering is working on all of the striping and hand painting the original Rescue artwork.

The Rescue is being restored as close to original as possible.
