October 17, 1962: A fire at the Tech-35th station on the North-South Route traps a train at the station, which also becomes damaged by the fire. The lead car is 6453; it was so badly damaged by the fire that it was retired on April 5, 1963 as a result of the incident. Its mate, 6454, was used by itself in tests of the Automatic Train Control system, then renumbered 6721 and mated to 6722 (former 6310).   This new facility saw very little service, as in October 1962 the Tech-35th station caught fire, nearly destroying the entire platform level and damaging other parts of the station. The new island platform built only a year before and the old northbound platform were almost completely destroyed, and parts of the station house were damaged. The fire also trapped a train at the station, of which cars 6453-54 were severely damaged by the fire. (Car 6453 was so badly damaged by the fire that it was retired on April 5, 1963.) Service between Cermak and Indiana was suspended for four days as a result of what was the most serious rapid transit fire in Chicago history to that date. Service was resumed through Tech-35th five days later and, in the short term, the station was reopened using the old, closed southbound platform and new, temporary northbound side platform. The mezzanine was repaired and reopened. The next year, the station was changed from an “A” station to an “AB” (all-stop) station on April 8. Three weeks later, a new, temporary island platform reopened on the south side of 35th Street, allowing the closure of the old southbound and temporary northbound side platforms, while a new permanent station was built on the north side of 35th.

On June 21, 1965, a new $500,000 station opened, replacing facilities that were destroyed by fire in 1962 and the temporary structures built thereafter. The station consisted of a tan brick station house on the north side of 35th Street with a signature series of curved canopies over the front entrance. From the rear of

I'm a Firefighter/Paramedic for the Lockport Fire District. I happened to come across a fire in Harvey yesterday morning at 15324 Honore. I snapped a few photos with my phone. It was a 1-story about 20 x 40 with fire in the basement. It went to a full still on their box #3. Posen, Dixmoor, and Homewood were Mutual Aid.

Chicago fire with Mayday 1-22-12 injures 2

The Chicago Tribune has an article about a fire that occurred on Saturday on the city’s south side at 7925 S. Colfax.

Two firefighters were injured during an extra-alarm fire that damaged three homes in the South Chicagoneighborhood early Sunday morning.

The fire department was notified of a fire on the 7900 block of South Colfax Avenue about 11:45 p.m., said Cmdr. Sean Flynn, a Chicago Fire Departmentspokesman.

… two firefighters briefly went unaccounted for.

“We noticed unsafe conditions and started to pull people out. A couple members got trapped upstairs, so we called mayday and pulled a 2-11,” Flynn said.

The 2-11 alarm and mayday alert brought more firefighters and equipment to the scene.

The two missing firefighters were accounted for a few minutes later after the firefighters regrouped, Flynn said.

An Emergency Medical Services Plan 1 was also called, bringing another five ambulances to the scene.

Chief Gordon J. Nord., Jr. went to the scene and submitted several images.

Patron punches sprinkler at SpyBar

Firegeezer.com has an article about a guy who decided to punch a sprinkler head in a downtown nightclub.

Nobody knows why he decided to knock the sprinkler head off in an area that has a low ceiling, but the resulting waterfall soon left several inches of water inside the SpyBar, a popular night spot on N. Franklin St. in Chicago.  The water also got into the floor DJ equipment causing some major damage with it.

Check out the post HERE and the mug shot.

… here is a shot of the engine that was side swiped on I-55. Plainfield FPD Engine 1941 was hit by the pump panel causing moderate damage. The engine was blocking for the ambulance. Engine 1941 is back in service and will be repaired in-house by the department mechanic. The engine crew was very lucky no one was seriously injured.
