Buffalo Grove firefighters and police officers were sent to 1011 Aspen Drive late Monday afternoon for a worker that was reported to be trapped in a hole in the front yard. Workers had been digging apparently to repair a residential sewer service at the home where one worker was in the hole and there was a ground collapse.
Arriving firefighters encountered workers frantically digging to free their coworker. The entire MABAS Division 1 Technical Rescue Team was requested as Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods firefighters initiated a rescue operation. Initial reports were that the worker unconscious and not breathing.
TRT techs arrived from Palatine, Mount Prospect, Des Plaines, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Inverness, and Bartlett along with the Buffalo Grove Mobile Comm. A special call was made for an Arlington Heights Public Works sewer vac, but the rescue was completed before the unit arrived.
The victim, who did not survive, was transported from the scene in a Mundelein ambulance.

Police officers and firefighters in Buffalo Grove were dispatched for an accident with entrapment today (8/12/22) at 2:30PM. The address given was 1185 Auburn Lane, which is north of Lake Cook Road at Arlington Heights Road. The caller was a man who said he was trapped underneath his truck. The address was determined by a cell phone ping of the caller.
Responding units found a tractor-trailer parked in the northbound curb lane of Arlington Heights Road adjacent to the Auburn Lane address. The trucks’s driver, apparently parked there and crawled underneath to inspect or attempt to repair some mechanical issue. While underneath the truck, it appears that the rig may have moved slightly as the truck was on a slight downward slope. One of the rear wheels of the tractor pinned the driver’s foot, trapping him in place.
Firefighters had some concern about the rescue operation and perhaps the truck’s stability, so they requested Long Grove Squad 55 and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Squad 51 to provide additional cribbing. At the same time, they requested an emergency response of a heavy wrecker to possibly lift the truck off of the driver. Shortly after a heavy wrecker arrived from Hillside Towing, firefighters were able to free the driver with airbags and the cribbing on hand. The two squads were cancelled and the tow truck stood by and eventually towed the tractor and trailer from the scene.

This from Larry Shapiro:
Shortly before noon today, Buffalo Grove companies were dispatched for a report of smoke coming from a basement window at 941 Pine Tree Circle South. Buffalo Grove Engine 26, freeing up from an EMS run reported a large header less than a minute later and upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 for the working fire.
Companies arrived with flames through the roof, emanating from a second floor unit in the center of the six-unit townhouse. Engine 26 encountered extreme heat on the second floor landing after forcing entry into the unit. An interior attack was in progress when a partial collapse was reported and companies retreated and began a defensive, exterior attack from the front and rear. Heavy fire was pushing out of the rear of the unit that was along a small lake. The master stream from Tower 25 was put into operation for a period of time before companies went interior again.
The alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm for additional manpower and then a 2nd Alarm due to the hot day and extensive work required to extinguish the remaining hot spots. Many of the 2nd alarm companies were returned in short order.
There was some extension to the 2nd floor unit to the west and water damage to the unit directly below the fire unit. A firewall assisted firefighter’s efforts to keep the fire from moving into units on the east.
Companies at the scene from the Code 4 included most Buffalo Grove companies, engines from Wheeling, Prospect Heights, and Arlington Heights, a squad from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, a tower ladder from Elk Grove Village, ambulances from Long Grove and Arlington Heights, and Buffalo Grove MobileComm.
The Box Alarm brought a quint from Mundelein, engines from Highland Park, Deerfield-Bannockburn, and Grayslake. The the second alarm brought two aerials, two squads, and two more engines.
